Well, had my first replacement Jul 14, 09. I had my second done on Nov. 02, 09. Amazing difference. The second has been a breeze, much less pain, little or no swelling, brusing etc. I was able to do more right out of this surgery better than one month out of the first surgery. The DR released me from the hosp a day early. At my first eval, the PT measured my Flex at 85 degrees and extension 0. Started out patient PT Mon 09, one week later. I saw my Surgeon on Nov 11 to remove staples, he was amazed. I asked why second was so much easier. His reply was it depended on "the approach" he used. Basically, it was different ways to cut. After nearly four months, I still have pain in my RT knee upon standing or using stairs. LT Knee has just about same amount of pain.
However, no matter how great your surgery goes, it is very painful. Period. It is going to hurt. As my PT puts it, "They cut off your leg and glued it back together. That's gonna' hurt!" Advice for those getting second, if possible, wait until you feel first is in really good shape and little pain. I was a bit overwhelmed by the pain in both for about the first week. Also, use ice as much as possible. I didn't first time and am now seeing a difference. Exercise and tone up before the surgery, it helps. Be patient and stay calm, it will get better. I keep telling myself that. You will have really good days an really bad days. It is part of the process. I'll keep you posted as I go along. Good luck to all and God bless. Thank you all for this site, it has been a God send for me. John.
