I had my TRHR 4 weeks ago today. I'm feeling really good, took a walk to the store yesterday, doing PT 3X a week and am happy with my progress. Has anyone actually driven before the doctor gave permission? My PT is only about 12 blocks away and I would really like to stop taking cabs and drive there and back. What do you guys think? - Deb

My home pt was suggesting that I drive at about 4 weeks. We went out to my car and she saw that I was not quite ready so she gave me exercises to help. My apt was at 6 weeks with my doc. He was surprised that I was not driving yet. At a little over 5 weeks I felt ready to drive. I did start after my 6 week apt

I think you may be rushing it a little, Deb! MAKE SURE YOU ARE ON NO MEDS, FIND AN EMPTY PARKING LOT, AND SLAM ON THE BRAKES A FEW TIMES AND SEE HOW YOU FEEL! There are reasons you should wait.....but you're almost there anyway! Take it easy.....Ans WELCOME!!!!!:shk::sct: :pzld:

Judles got it! But you need to be careful what you are taking - driving under the influence of drugs is an offence ...

I was going to say the same dont take need and drive, I wasn't allowed till 6 weeks now with a cast still cant......Just be careful is there anyone that can take you are get it for you just a lil longer....Good Luck to ya...........)

Thanx! The strongest thing I take is 1 Aleve. I may try to drive around the block tomorrow and see how I feel. I'll let you guys know (I can always use my left foot for the brake and keep my 4-way flashers on so people stay away).

I also second Judles' advice. I had direct anterior approach with a quite speedy recovery. Since I was walking without aids after 14 days, thought I was Super Woman--until I tried to mimic the movement of moving foot from accelerator to brake while safely sitting on my living room couch, that is! The joint was fine--no pain--but the muscles were still in pretty puny shape! My "reaction time" was pretty slow. So I "practiced" a lot while watching TV every evening. I drove--confidently & easily--at 5 weeks. (Since I never drove a stick shift, can't imagine using my left foot--I'd be a total klutz even now, almost a year later!)

Hi Renee!! So nice to see you posting! :thmb:
I don't think it has anything to do with being a klutz at all! Deb.....STILL don't think you should be in such a rush!!!:pzld::pzld:

I ended up taking a short drive yesterday (5 blocks) to the store and back. My hip was very sore with a pain in the thigh in the front. I iced it and today took a cab to PT. I spoke with the terapist and he said I'm really right on the cusp of driving and we should err on the side of safety and continue with the cabs until next week's doctor's appt and see what they say. It's absolutely true that you have to listen to your body!
