I just came from my three month check up and the doc assured me that the "knocking" which he called "tapping" was normal with the Stryker knee. He told me that this "tapping" is the noise it makes when it gives me range of motion, so I should be grateful for it---which was a bit much!!!

I think the knee is loose and that is why it makes noises. He claims that this is normal and that some people "who are less sensitive" don't even notice it or hear it. I hear it when I extend the leg and when I move rapidly laterally. It is not loud, just a noise. (Yes, I am sensitive and yes it is irritating!!!!!) When I am in a movie theater or someplace else quiet, I hold my knee stiff so that it does not make any noises. So far, my husband claims that he does not hear it--but I am not sure that he is not taking the path that leads to less craziness from me!!!

Does anyone else have "tapping" from their knee. the doc told me that it would go away "somewhat"--to which I replied, What, when it is not so loose? He just sighed.

Yep...now you mention it. I too have a Stryker. If I sitting a doin leg lifts with weights it CLUNKS. Does not hurt....I just thought it was normal. It does no hurt. Someone..my PT???..said it decreases as the tendons and quad muscles strenghten.

Clunker has the problem but his has not gone away.

I have great rom and don't have that problem but I don't have that
type of knee.

I do hope it stops, I would be sensitive also.

Both of my knees make noise--they are both DePuy knees. Like Clunker, I clunk. It happens the most when I move my knee sideways, or when I first get going after resting. It's just part of having an artificial joint.

I never have experienced the clunking, but my knees both make a Velcro ripping sound when I stand up or sit down. It started at 10 months out. It is from scar tissue growing right over the implant according to the OS.

My knee "thunks" but it's intermittent. Sometimes not, most of the time yes. I am getting used to it, but it is annoying.

Yikes!!!! Thunks & clunks??? At least you guys aren't in PAIN! I bet it would be embarassing sometimes, but maintain your sense of humor til your quads strengthen!!! (:)0)

My knee does not make noise, but sometimes it feels like something is moving around a little - maybe a tendon or something. It doesn't cause any unusual pain, but I am still only at 3 weeks post surgery. I have a Zimmer high flex knee. I asked my OS about this and he repeated something that he had told me prior to surgery - he said that after a knee replacement many people report feeling that something is not quite 'natural or normal' about the knee. This is unlike hip replacements where most people, including myself, seem to forget about the hip because it feels so normal.
It would be annoying if the knee made a significant noise. I saw a YouTube video showing people with ceramic on ceramic hips that were quite noisy. My surgeon had said that happens about 5% of the time with ceramic implants. My surgeon doesn't use that type of hip. I have two metal on metal hips that are both quiet thankfully.

Me,too! I have MOM,too! I'd be mortified and very embarassed if my hip made noise because I'm sooo active!! (:)0)

My clunking has mostly gone away...At first, I couldn't stand working out on and elliptical trainer. I felt like Robocop.
It seldom clunks any more.
I have the DePuy Rotating Platform.

I have a Biomet-something or other and I'm hard of hearing, so I rarely hear anything. Sometime I feel what I would call a clicking or slight ticking... doesn't feel painful or anything.

My non-cyborg knee cracks and pops with almost every step. That I can hear and feel. :hehe:

I don't have a clue what kind of knees I have but I have fun with mine. If I take my fingers and wiggle my knee and really really relax, I can tap on it and play them like the drums. My PT showed me that. I have so much fun with it. I know that's not the same thing all of you are talking about but I just wanted to share that with you. The noise I can make is just the plastic tapping against the metal. I know...say it...I'm crazy...LOL.

Cindy

Duh yes I would say your PT is crazy:shk: I can't believe she showed you that.

But at least you are having fun:D:D:D

How is the pain in the knee now

Not crazy, Cindy....just fun. I bet you are the life of the party!!! No other entertainment required!:hehe::hehe:

Hey, these knees cost a BUNCH....why not have some fun with them???

Cindy.... If I know anyone who needs a drummer, I'll be sure to let you know!!! (:)0)

Cindy,

That is the noise that I hear--the metal hitting the plastic.--it makes a little tapping sound. I don't like "playing the drums" when I am walking around. It is not constant--just once iin a while, especially when the knee is swollen.

when I get up sometimes in the am, I hear a noise for a half hour or so. I yell at my husband, now--can you hear that??? He always says that he cannot hear it---but I think he just does not want me to get crazier thinking that other people can hear it.

I have great ROm--140/0 and my leg is definitely getting stronger--and I can balance on the bosu ball (it is half an exercise ball) when I do my hip strengthening. I can jump on and off the bosu ball---and can now lift 60 pounds on the leg lift with each leg (I used to be able to lift 100 lbs per leg--but, will settle for 75 right now). But, the tap, tap, tap drives me nuts!!! At least when I ski I will be outside and won't have to listen to that!!! Kelly

Doug, I was laughing at Robot Cop!!! I have begun to feel like the ccrocodile in Peter pan--I can't sneak up on anyone right now
!! Kelly

Kelly, if that's exactly what you are hearing I don't think you need to worry. There's a space between the plastic piece and the metal...at least with mine there is according to looking at the x-rays and what Joseph said (my PT). Ask your OS about it the next time you see him/her.

Cindy,

I did ask the OS and he told me the sound is normal!!! He told me I should be happy that I can move around and to not listen to the sound!! All I can hear in my head is "Be Happy".

I admit that I am neurotic, but the noise bothers me. I could never have two knees like this--I would have to be committed. My PT says that the ligaments are a little loose and thatis why the plastic is hitting the metal--he claims that if I strengthen the knee it will
"probably" stop. So, I am upping my workouts again---I will do anything to make the noise stop!!! Kelly
