Today a friend suggested I look at Memory Foam. She suffered from bad arthritis in her shoulder and she said she had really benefitted from getting one. She bought a mattress but you can also get a mattress topper which is what I would consider because Im finding my bed is so uncomfortable now with my knee . I looked on the internet and they are pretty expensive ie £99+ for a double bed.

THeir claim is

Double SleepBetter 2" thick Memory Foam Topper
Ideal for reviving an old mattress, adding comfort to an ordinary bed or for anyone with sleep or back problems
Revolutionary surface is weight- and temperature-sensitive, continually moulding to each part of your body to avoid pressure points
Foam regains its original shape over and over again

What does anyone think? Would it be a total waste of money? !! Has anyone got one already?

Ever hopeful :-)

So glad you brought that up. I think there was a discussion in the past, but I am considering getting a topper myself with back surgery next week.

I've been looking into the memory foam myself lately. I'm hoping that would help with my hip pain.
I'm just concerned that any foam I lay on is going to keep its memory.

I bought a new mattress with a memory foam "pillow top" and I love it. It is soft on top for my sore hips and shoulders, but firm underneath for my arthritic spine. My mattress is a Serta. I would think a memory foam topper would be pretty similar.

Not all memory foam is created equal. So if you buy a topper make sure it has a "sleep trial" policy so you can return it if you don't like it.

I considered buying a Tempur-pedic bed, but the one I wanted was just more $ than I could justify spending..... this was a compromise but a good one for me.

Hi...I bought a 3" Memory Foam topper at Costco's for just over a hundred dollars and it has been wonderful. It helped me sleep so much better with my new TLKR in Nov....it allowed me to lay on my side . Well worth the investment...Carol

Not to be the odd man out, but...

I had to remove my 3" memory foam from the bed becasue it was hampering me getting in and out after the BHR (hip resurfacing). I got around much better on the still soft but firmer than memory foam mattress top.

Now three weeks after surgery I'm getting in and out of bed relatively easily, and at some point I'll put the memory foam back on becasue it is comfy, but I don't recommend it for immediately post surgery.

How is the sleep number mattress? I've seen them advertised. My wife likes super firm and I have evolved to liking something softer.

Memory foam is the best thing since sliced bread! I have had a 1" topper for ages and it was terrific! Recently it wore out so I got a 3" topper and it's total bliss! Got one for my sister as well and she's loving it too!

I think that if you have found a 2" double topper for under £100 that is a real snip. I paid £90 for my single one. But think of it this way ~ it's an investment in your wellbeing.

As a side report, I have a friend who, being a lady of large proportions, has suffered with two pressure sores on her behind for almost 2 years. So I got her a 4" memory foam cushion last August for her birthday and she told me the other day that both her sores are finally healed up!

Memory foam is ace!

That is a fantastic response! Thank you all so much!

So I will definitely look in to this now. its a question of whether I get 2 ins or 3 ins. I have bookmarked several UK sites and now its a choice - Oh how I hate choices!

beachcomber's advice about getting a trial policy is a good idea.

btw Im not sure we are allowed to put a url link up on here on not? If we ARE then you might help me make this choice!!

Thanks - and looking forward to a comfier bed

I have a memory foam topper and love it. Mine is 3 inches. I wouldn't suggest less. When my knees were pre-TKR it didn't help them at all but the rest of me was very comfy. I've had it for a few years and think I want to get a new one but I'm holding out for when I upgrade from a queen to king which I hope to do soon. I might even bump up to 4 inces. Websites like smartbargains and overstock.com have them at good prices and both have a 30 day return policy I think. You just get stuck with return postage.

kipper my vote is for 3 inches.
Judy

I think seeing I'm having back surgery, I am going for a 4 inch.

THanks for all the info on memory foam toppers. I am forwarding to my hubby's email. Want to get a topper more for him as he wakes up most mornings in pain--so far, despite hip replacement, the firm mattress we have is comfy for me. But will try the topper in hopes that it will make him more comfy--before we go for the more expensive new bed.

I also like Mudpro had to remove my memory foam from the bed when I came home from the hospital as I am a bit short..lol...and I could not get up on to the bed but after a week we put it back on because it made it so much easier for my leg to melt into it and I got a better sleep. Carol

I am ready to order one from overstock . Is there a difference if it says memory foam as I see wildly different prices from dept stores?
Judy
