I knew it had to happen one of these days....that I would do something "funky" related to my new knee. Others have reported accidental falls, tripping over dogs, and other unexpected events that made the new knee move in less-than-guarded ways. I had mine yesterday.....9 months out of surgery.
We are building a deck about half a story off the ground out in the back yard. My husband had all the stringers up on the top level and we have had boards laid across them for weeks that I've been walking on with no problem. But yesterday, I started screwing the boards down. I worked on that the better part of the afternoon mostly from a a seated (or sometimes kneeling - HOORAY!!!) position. At the end of the day as I was getting up from my seated position, I neglected to notice that one of my "loose" boards had moved slightly and was not where it had been. I started to stand up and put my non-TKR leg back to stand on the non-existent board. Uh-oh.....leg went completely down through the hole and forced my TKR leg to bend and accommodate that drop. Oh my.
No pain in the knee, but it scared the poop out of me. I'm not sure, but I think I managed to bend more than I have been. Pretty scary.
Of course my pride was bruised at being so hugely DUMB! And I ended up with two bruises on my legs and one on my hip where they scraped the deck joists on the way down through the hole. My my TKR knee is just fine and came through it all with no problem. Thank God!!! So I guess all that they say about the new joints being stronger than the original is true. And now I probably have more bend than before. But I certainly wouldn't recommend the do-it-yourself approach like this for more bend through manipulation!!
