do I need hip replacement?

I had a partial knee replacement just over 2 years ago. I have not posted for several months.

It seems like overnight a few months ago I started having pain so severe I cannot put my left foot up to put my sock on the same side I had the knee replaced. I usually have help to put my sock on but can do it myself, it just takes a while and is so painful. I avoid doing it as long as I can and have even worn socks to bed a couple times so I didn't have to face putting them on in the morning.

I have not been to my primary care Dr yet, that is coming next week for sure. Walking does not seem to bother me, unless I have been sitting for a while or standing doesn't either unless I stand in one place for a long time. Ibuprofen and Tylenol arthritis do not help with the pain at all.

Do you sometime need a hip replacement after knee replacement? I dread the thought of another surgery to put another foreign object in my body. The knee replacement has been a great thing for me. I am back to all my normal activities and still work every day.

@boots Unfortunately it is very common to need another joint replaced. But the only way to determine if you need THR is an x-ray. Do see your PCP to get scheduled for an x-ray.

Sure sounds like hip trouble but you never know. If nothing else, I understand hips are much easier than knees. Hopefully you can get xrays and a surgical consult soon.

It's not an inevitable consequence but not unheard of either. I have a sister who had both hips and knees done, knee 1, knee2, hip 1, hip 3! That's not uncommon either but neither is it all connected.

Ibuprofen and Tylenol arthritis do not help with the pain at all.

That also is common. There are NO pain meds that will manage this kind of pain. None at all. Sorry!

Hip pain is usually in the groin area.

That's incorrect, @onespirit Hip pain CAN be in the groin area but it can also be pretty much anywhere,

My surgeons have told me over the years that if pain on outside of hip it is most likely a back problem. I have had 4 hip replacements & my pain was & is in groin. I am speaking about my experience not as a professional.

Well, I was busy working at a funeral luncheon when the dr office called, one of the girls in the office not the dr, xray shows moderate arthritis, sooo what am I supposed to do now?? I asked the girl to have him call me so I could discuss what should be my next step. So tired of this pain and not being able to function 'normally'

my PCP is referring me to the dr who did my knee replacement. I asked if he thought an arthritis specialist would work? he doesn't think so. I knew this was probably coming. My sister had her hips replaced in her mid 50s and my baby sister had hers done at 57, I'm 61. we have a history of arthritis. My mom had hers both done in her 60s and one of those replaced due to infection in her 80s

Hi boots, I'm from Michigan too. I'm on my way riding to Jackson for EMG testing. My hip MRI showed moderate arthritis also, but I have something else going on it seems. Where the leg attaches to the body in front I have like a tendon or muscle or something that pulls and feels like taffy pulling. Now using one crutch to walk, because it feels like I keep re-injuring it if I put full weight on. Still waiting to see if it's the hip too. Its frustrating when they say just a little arthritis, you feel like well what next the?

I'm still waiting for the ortho dr to call. But I have discovered that ibuprofen does help the pain a bit and Tylenol arthritis does nothing. I took the Tylenol for two days and no relief, then I went back to the advil and it seems to at least make it so I can move a little better. the biggest issue is not being able to do things or avoiding doing things because of the pain

I didn't find anything that could help with the pain, though I did lay on a heating pad for seemed like ages...
Somehow soothing if not necessarily pain relieving.

Still hanging in there, I finally got a call from the Orthopedic office this morning for an appointment June 14, some how they didn't receive the fax from my primary care doctor that was sent 4/29 so another was sent 5/9. After working 15+ hours on a school election last Tuesday, I went on a 14 hr round trip with a friend Wednesday, thankful that she had heated seats!! what a great thing. I am looking forward to some answers in a month. trying to keep moving and using heat to help with the pain. bouncing around and climbing in and out of the skid loader to scrape manure has become a chore I would rather not do, but that is not happening any time soon.

Had my appointment today. Decided after talking with the dr to try cortisone shot, so June 24 I will check in at 6:45 for a 15 minute (I am assured) procedure. He said I may get three months or not much relief at all. It was nice to see the x ray where he could show me exactly what is going on. the right hip looks good! I can repeat the shots if I find they work for me. That is the plan for now.
