Hello everyone,

My mother had the anterior approach hip replacement surgery almost 2 weeks ago. She has been doing well, getting stronger with less pain every day.

Today she was in the bathroom and when she stood up she said she felt something painful and odd so she sat back down. When she tried again the bad pain was gone and just had a minor amount of pain on walking.

Is this necessarily a dislocation or could she have strained something with an awkward movement?

If it is a dislocation would she have great pain upon walking (she said it was very minor, not severe)?

Thank you for any insight?

This is not a dislocation. If it were a dislocation she would be in an great amount of pain and would require an ambulance trip to the hospital to have it reseated. She would NOT be able to walk at all.
I believe she had a muscle spasm of some sort. As long as she maintains the doctors orders especially for the first six weeks.. not go past the 90 degree angle while using the bathroom.... does she have the toilet seat riser? If not then she needs to have one without a doubt.
You said she was doing very well otherwise so I'm sure she's doing ok.
Let us hear from you and give her our best. We're here to help.
Blessings to you~

Right above your thread new yorker just had a thread like this maybe there are some answers there........

With a hip dislocation, she would not be able to stand, walk, nor would she be able to sit down. It is excrutiating pain. Because the hip in place holds all the muscles where they should be. if you have a hip dislocation, the muscles have nothing holding them in place and they just go crazy like massive muscle cramps and it hurts so badly. She needs to be careful though, because most hip dislocations occur during the first 6 months. (mine did not happen until i had the replacement for 6 years. And i remember my surgeon/doctor telling me that most hip replacements dislocate up until your 6months post op. I told him ok, but my hip is not like most patients! He agreed)

And furthermore, your leg looks something like this ....
(it's the right leg without the sock!)
