i had total right hip feb 27th, last week i was at the market and leaned down to tie my shoe and my hip dislocated. went and saw the surgeon he said 8 weeks of being real careful. he said if it dislocates again he will have to reposition it. now i'm terrified to move around like i was. It also makes me wonder if the surgeon has doubts about the angle. anybody dislocated theirs?

Oh my goodness! So I trust he put it back in place for you. I can imagine you'd be on tenterhooks about it and will be right to move with extreme care. I would too, were I in your shoes.

It's always the first thing they think of when a dislocation occurs. Mostly the reason for dislocations is that the cup has been put in at too acute an angle because if it was the correct angle it would be about 85% secure (guess-timate).

Well, welcome to BoneSmart. Stay with us and let us cheer you one whilst you go through this anxious period.

Welcome, Chris! OUCH! The dislocation must have hurt like the dickens.....did your surgeon
Put the prosthesis back surgically? Has it stabilized? 00i wish you good luck! Please take t easy abd post so we know how you are doing!

thank you both, emergency did put it back in, it is really something to avoid if at all possible. I'm pt next week and plan on taking it slow

Hi Chris, welcome to Bonesmart. You will get lots of support here. I'm so sorry to hear about your setback. Are you now back on the original hip precautions? It will be a balancing act between pursuing effective PT and keeping your new hip safe at the same time. Glad to hear you will be having supervised PT. They will make sure your exercises are safe.
All the best to you,
Gail

Definitely take it slow! So sorry this happened to you! You must be afraid to move! Please be careful and be kind to yourself! Healing is a slow process!

Hi Chris,

I doubt if this is much consolation to you, but you've probably saved a few people from going through what you've gone through. I'm seven weeks post op. and I must admit I've become pretty careless. Believe me, I wish it hadn't happened to you, but your coming here and telling us all about it will make me, for one, a lot more careful. I owe you one.

Enjoy it all,

Nick

Chris welcome to the BoneSmart family! I hope you can begin to relax a little about your situation. Of course you need to be careful as the doctor instructed!!! I'm thinking you'll begin to feel more confident as you learn what movements you can safely do in therapy. Good luck to you and post when you can. We'll all be wanting to know you are all right!

Well, Nick - if you really want a cautionary tale, my chiropodist (an RN) told me how one of his elderly patients dislocated her hip cutting her toenails. She'd pulled her foot up on to the opposite knee. It was her normal hip - no surgical history! That made me wince!

Ow !!

Wow Chris, that must have been awful! I am amazed that you could bend that far down. I am at 7 weeks also, and there is no way I could tie my shoe - my hip and leg says no-no and I listen:-)

Nick, could you bend that way pain free? Just curious.

Chris-As others have said: be good to yourself! These prosedures are wonderful, and give us back our lives, but the healing process is long and cannot be rushed. You owe it to yourself to take it very easy. I imagine when you're feeling good it's easy to forget that you've been through a major trauma and begin to act normally--what's more normal than tying your shoes! Good luck as you continue to recover.

Just about, but I'm not aiming to do it!! :-)

That sounds awful, Chris. Hope it heals quickly for you. I can't even imagine it happening, so I definitely feel bad for you.

I actually could bend that far, i had been tying my shoes for about a week at that point. I had a great therapist, he had a different set of exercises than just the ones in the pamphlet. I thought that my recovery was going great but i have in the past pushed to hard, lower back surgery last year and total rt knee in 05,

Chris
WElcome. I had an uneventful right hip replacement last June. Thoracic spine surgery Jan'09, knee surgery Dec '08 and cervical spine fusion july '07. I can relate!!!
