On Feb 16th , 09 I had a THR on my Lt. hip. I am 54 years old.
After the surgury I was tranfered to a rehab hosp. I was tould what to do and what not to do. But at that time it all seemed over whelming. I was walking for about two days and seemed to be doing OK. But on the 5th day after surgury, I went to the bath room to have a BM. well, In the rehab Hosp. there was not a raised toilet seat. I thought that the Rehab Hosp. knew better than me? Without realising it my foot was turned in , I bent to far foward, and BAM, the hip came out.
The pain was unbareable , they rushed me back to the ER where I was put under to put the hip back in place. Thank God they where able to do it.
They returned me back to the rehab Hosp that night and don't you know the whole Hosp was searching high and low to find a raised toilet seat. Maybe this could of been prevented if there was a raised toilet seat.

Dancer, welcome to the BoneSmart family. What a horrible experience for you!!! I'm so glad they were able to put your hip back into place. My word!!! You would think a hosptital or rehab center would understand the need for a raised toilet seat! Go figure!! I bet they took extra good care of YOU while in rehab after THAT incident!!!

Hope your recovery is progressing fine now and that this will one day be just a story to tell.

OMG!!!! What a horrible experience for You! I don't know what kind of STUPID rehab facility would NOT even have a raised toilet seat. What a flagrant disregard of your recuperation process, Dee!!! What did your OS say? What about the rehab ? Just get OUT of there & I really think you have to DO something to not only protect others in the future, but yourself!
Now I can say WELCOME! You've come to the RIGHT place! How are you feeling NOW? Are you certain your prosthesis is put back CORRECTLY now???!!! Please keep posting so we can see how you are doing! Good luck!!!

That is a horrible story. After my hip replacement it was very uncomfortable using the bathroom in my ortho room. When I got moved to the rehab floor it was jsut the opposite, my room had a nice raised toilet seat.

I personally can't believe you had no raised seat in a rehab hospital. I am actually shocked that all the hospital toilets are not raised. Beware they are not even raised in the handicapped stalls.

I hope the rest of yuor recovery is perfect smooth and painfree. Welcome
Judy

I am so very sorry you had to go through this. Not a lot one can say that doesn't sound like a trite cliche. Hope it repairs soundly in good time.

The entire hospital floor, where I had my surgery was exclusively used for hip and knee surgeries. And yet, they had no raised toilet seats.Just a raised chair, with a pot hung under it.Just a portable plastic lift for the toilet, would have been an improvement. And a lot easier to flush. Also the wheelchairs they used, had no foot props on them.I had to use my good leg to hold my operated leg up while being pushed.

As others have already said, so sorry for your experience - I had an imagionary pain just reading your account...

I couldn't say more good things about my prep and orientation to what I would need after surgery. As w/ Mr. T, the section of the hospital I was in was set aside exclusively for joint replacement, and they gave a detailed preperation class a few days before the surery that covered the precations and gave some practical examples such as going to the bathroom and bending pst 90 degrees.

If yoiu didn't receive this kind of orientation and the rehab facility didn't bother to provide you appropriate equipment; well I would be taking a piece out of someones rear end!

Hi, I echo Mudpro. I also had a thorough orientation at the hospital joint replacement unit. Was emphasized that a raised toilet was required for hips. Would definitely write a letter of complaint (minimally!!) re: your unacceptable treatment.

I thought I was treated poorly at our subacute facility when my finger was poked to check my "sugar"--and I don't have diabetes!!! (At least it came up normal--the former pt in my bed was diabetic, the hospital heard about it.)

Hope the rest of your care is super good.

Laurie (RTHR 8/26/09 and doing great)

Hi Dancer,

Welcome to Bonesmart. What an experience, and isn't it something all us hippies fear. So pleased you had help on the spot and hope your recovery goes along smoothly for you now.

I'm only short so while I started with a raised toilet seat it was actually more difficult for me that without one, so after a couple of days, we took it out of our room. I was in with a knee person that time, so she was happy it was gone too. Pretty silly of the rehab not to have one there for you.

Regards

Chris :)

I found out the hard way about the feet turnuing in as well. But i was going up a flight of stairs 1 week post op.I almost dislocated my right hip my foot turned in and it felt like my right quad was going to rip right out of my leg.So now i pay special att to placement of my feet.By the way im new here. i had bilateral thr feb19-9

Hi Rodney - I saw you register. Welcome to BoneSmart!

Was that an actual dislocation or just a near miss?

Welcome aboard,Rodney! ;). Hope you're back on the right track now! :)

That sounds really scary! What if you should lose your balance and accidently turn your foot inward to catch your fall?

After how any months are you able to sit low, turn your feet in, and cross your legs?

Welcome Rodney
I am glad yyou did not dislocate your hip(s). Be good to yourself, take pain meds and stool softeners and post often.
I love making new friends
Judy

Welcome to the forum, Rodney. What a frightening experience!!! So glad you decided to tell about it so that others can learn and be careful in the early stages of recovery. Hope things go better from now on for you!!

Welcome Rodney,

Take care and every good wish for your recovery.

Chris :)
