Great vid, kimsey! And goes to prove a couple of things I have been saying ....
1. Minimally invasive as employed by OSs is actually reduced incision.
2. Actually very few surgeons cut the quads. It is a known technique but most surgeons (specially here in the UK) decline to use it for the very reasons stated in this video. Retracting the quads as he demonstrated is by far the more accepted method.
Historical factoid:
In fact, when Charnely first developed his hip replacement, he used the same anterior approach that McKee did but instead of using the orthopaedic table whereby the leg could be dropped way down to permit good access to the acetablulum, he cut off the bony protruberance (trocanter) and then wired it back on again! In other hands, whilst the replacement was carried out swiftly, wiring the trochanter back would often take another hour or more! and you can just imagine the recovery! ouch, ouch! Plus, non-unions and other problems were very common and it was very quickly dropped (thank the good Lord!)
But I loved Ference's humility and the way he closed mentioning how he believed this approach was a gift from God and that he saw himself living a life of service and helping people! Awesome! I'd go to that man in a heartbeat!
