Well, I really feel inadequate this days. I have been having horrendous headaches, wake up with go to sleep with. I have had these on for a few days and then off for over the last couple of years. Has sinus xray and MRI of head. Pain has been mild to severe last few days. I noticed that it seems to be near a root canel tooth ao I am having that checked out before I asked for an MRA that will look at the arteries in my head to r/o an aneursym.

Am going to dentist tomorrow, can't believe I got in by calling today but I must have sounded desperate. My OS gave me a script for Keflex 500 mg back in February and I have misplaced it but I am sure it said take one pill night before and then 3 the next day. My dentist called Keflex in at the drug store and when I picked it up it says take four capsules 1 hour before appointment and I have 20 in the bottle. I didn't noticed this until I got home and the pharmacy is closed. Can anyone tell me if this sounds right??

I sure don't want to take a chance getting an infection that will affect my knee.

Hey Nana

I just looked at my bottle and it said 4 pills one hour before. Hope that helps.

Nana! Call up your dentist's office tonite
& leave a message!!!I bet they'll get back to you before your appointment!!! :)

Thanks I'll try that. I think that so long on pain meds has really worked on the rationale part of my brain. I really use to be pretty good at making good decisions and these days I question myself over and over.

Nana,,,,,,join the club!!!! :). Hope you feel better!!:)

Nana, I am a Oncology RN. We use the same precautions for our patients who have implanted ports. It is 4 capsules(500mg each) 1 hour prior to a dentist appointment. I just had my first cleaning after my TKR and that is exactly what my OS had me do.

Hope that helps,
Mary

Nana.....that is exactly what my dosage is. I hope your dentist can get to the bottom of your headaches. As we all know, there is NOTHING worse than chronic pain!!

Hi Nana - I've been a dental nurse for the past 33 years and it is definitely 4 x 500 mg Keflex, 1 hour prior to your dental appt. Good luck and I hope they get to the bottom of what is causing your headaches.

Peta

I take 4 caps of Amoxicillian 500 mg 1 hour before my dental appointments. I have been doing this for years as I also have mitral valve prolapse. I hate taking the pills before appointments and the Heart Association had just decided that it was not necessary for MVP and I was so excited.. then I did BTKR and now I have to do it again. I have never taken Keflex tho. I guess just another opinion... hope your headaches are relieved at the dentist.

I'm allergic to penicillin! Mycins are usually prescribed! :)

Rachel, I'm also allergic to penicillin and I take Clindamycin.

Well I survived the dentist. It was 2 gm of Keflex 1 hour prior. I talked with my dentist and he says that the OS's in our area lean toward always taking the antibiotics for dental work and I also found out that I will need to take this same dose before my EDG and colonscopy in May or June this year.
I have a condition known as Barrett's Esophagus without dysplasia.

My oldest brother passed two years ago at age 64 of adenocarcinoma of the esophagus and interestingly so my Mom passed five years ago of adenocarcinoma of the liver and it was't the primary site since adeno tissue is usually in the breast or GI tissue so it is a concern with me and I am monitored annually for two consecutive years and then q 2 years if my next one is still without dyplasia.

Thanks for ALL your help!!! I am getting dependent on you folks. I tell my PT that I am hooked on Bone Smart and PT. She is always kidding me saying well what have you learned from your forum and of course I have plenty to share.
Blessings to ALL
Nana

Glad things went well, Nana....hooray!!

I guess if a person must be addicted to something, BoneSmart is a good thing....you meet the nicest people here....like YOU! Stay well!!

Based on all this -- I am not looking forward to my first teeth cleaning appointment! I really HATE taking anti-biotics. But I guess if it's just the big dose before the cleaning it's not so bad. But I am wondering now -- I am probably going again the prague to teach this summer (2 months). I'm thinking maybe I should have a prescription filled for the anti-biotics -- jsut in case I need emergency dental work in Prague... something else to worry about. Did you guys get your prescription from your dentist or your regualr doctor?

Just to add to the cross-section of experiences... I am also having to take 4@ 500mg tablets of amoxicillon one hour before my dental appointment today; that's 2,000 mg for you mathmatically challenged types!

Seems like over kill to me, but I'm just a lowly plasterer, what do I know; so pass the organge juice!

Quick question for Jo........I have a colonoscopy every 12 months (because of active Crohns Disease) and I'm booked in for my next one (first since THR 6 months ago) in a weeks time. It never crossed my mind that I might require antibiotics beforehand - do I? :sct:

I will ring my OS and gastroenterologist tomorrow to ask them, but I thought I'd check with you as I value your opinion just as much as theirs! :)

Yes! Peta! You definitely need antibiotics for that colonoscopy! I'm having a tooth extracted this morning! Can't wait to take those antibiotics on an empty stomach...ugh!!! :(
