Day before ?

When I had my surgery on Monday, Jan 7th, I was admitted to the hospital at 9pm on Sunday night before. My surgeon did all of his patients that way....he said he found it to help so much with nerves...didn't have patients arriving late due to unforeseen circumstances....etc. It worked out great!!....got to hang out with all my peeps on the floor...got a nice sleeping pill....got up early - prepped and out the door. I wish all surgeons did that.

Good Luck Jim...one of my family members is having hers done at the same time as yours. I'll be sending up some good "kneesal" prayers!

(Get up early and take a HOT SHOWER....you won't get one for a little while!!!)

Jim, you will be in my prayers tonight. I pray all goes well for you, that you get what you need when you need it - pain meds and all - that you have especially caring nurses and PTs and that you have an easy journey. God bless you, hun!

The Day before surgery I went and taught my classes, as normal. After each class I had kids give me cards, hugs, etc., but I wanted the day tokind of "sneak up on me" and it sort of did. I really didn't get too nervous until the night before and in the surgical prep room---but by that time, I hadplenty of good chemicals...

My best to you---you will be in great hands---my Ortho does nothing but TKR's and BTKR's---you won't believe how much better you will eventually feel!

In our prayers,

Tim C

PS---Patti is right on about the shower---take a long one, take a good one, and take a hot one, 'cause its gonna be a while...

JB: Id offer my suggestions but everyone else has covered it! If I made it through the surgery and recovery, and I did, YOU can too! Funny thing, once I got to the hospital, all my fears left me and it was all kind of interesting.
God Bless and Godspeed in your recovery!
Chuck, T Man

Ditto on the shower! A nice long hot shower and enjoy it.

I've been thinking about our dude, Jim, all morning. Depending on his time zone, he might just have his surgery behind him!!!
Bring on the morphine!!!!and the bedpan.....and THE machine! (actually, I never had to use it)
Let us hear from you Jim!!!

all the love and prayers you'll need jim are on this board...come back to us as soon as you can, we'll be here to see you through.
p.s. thought i'd have my darn cast off this wrist on wednesday but he really burst my bubble and said 2 more weeks to be sure...i am totallt going crazy with it...it's so hindering my rehab and mt life.......don't think when you get home you can do it yourself ....ask for the help you'll need and you won't end up in my shoes , back to surg. and casted to the elbow...stay strong and God speed. and nuneez, do what ever you want this week....it will be awhile before you get out and about so ENJOY your days leading up to surgery and try to relax.

shug...I can't IMAGINE how bad this has been for you. If I couldn't use both arms for the last 6 weeks, I would have been BEDRIDDEN~!! Hope it heals up lightning fast!!!....so sorry you've had to deal with that on top of everything else.

Pattipoo,
It's funny I've been thinking about Jim all morning also. Other than the surprise prostate/catheter issue I had, my stay in the hospital was very pleasant. Great nurses who were very attentive and sympathetic, and the hospital food was really good. I ate what I wanted and my teenage son wiped out the rest.
bsasssy, I can't even begin to imagine what you are going through. Hang tuff!!

it hasn't been easy but i guess the only saving grace is that when i fell , i didn't fall on my knee!! but i've teally had it!! how's your pain level? my new therapist thinks i've been over working it since the pain is pretty constant .. she told me to back off the therapy so much....i just want this tightness to go away , dr. said could be up to a year.....that its the swelling that cozes it....anyone else feel it? they hooked me to some machine yesterday that was supposed to stimulate it an reduce swelling, it's been worse ever since......oh well, at least i drove for the 1st time and that felt awesome!!! even w/one hand ,,,,lol

The tightness drives me insane.....I have a close friend that had the same surgery a little over a year ago....he keeps promising me that it will go away as everything heals....he's active - so am I - so I'm being patient.

I can't take much medicine during the day - hard to work with it!!! - but I'm so stiff and aching by the time I've pulled my 9 hours at work that go straight home and take a max. dose of my percocet....I'm sure it all be better soon.

we'll keep on keeping on!!

I was 5 weeks post op. yesterday. I've given up fighting the pain. It wins every time. The Dr. without hesitation gave me 50 more pills. Oxycodone. I take one every 4-6 hours.
The stiffness and swelling is getting very frustrating. I guess something else that is training me to be more patient.
My ROM is constantly getting better. I'm doing everything I can to keep the Dr. from mentioning the "manipulation" word.
I know that every time I work out, I am overdoing it to some degree. I always do 30-45 mins on the bike. I start with a high seat and every 5 mins. I lower it one notch. Next week I'll probably raise it to 7-8 mins per notch.
I think at this point, we can't go back. Our only option is forward so make the best of it. Pills, exercise, ice. And of course our internet friends on this forum. I feel sorry knowing there are people at home who don't know about this site. Who are scared, frustrated, depressed, and in pain. I know I tell everyone about it. Oh well , nap time.

I'm a week ahead of you, Dougie....my Dr. just loaded me up - without hesitation - with 45 #10 percocets. I told him I feel like a junkie....he said for me to get over myself and trust him! Well......he does have the DEGREE!!!

I think all of us need to look at how far we have come and stop thinking about how far we have to go. As for the meds, I won't even tell you guys how much I'm taking to get through therapy days, but I'm clean on the non-therapy days. My stiffness has reduced to times of first thing in the morning and during and right after a lot of walking or riding in a car. It doesn't really hurt so much as just feel so darn tight. I figure time will take of that. I think its better to take the meds and do the therapy than it is to let the pain hold you back. To all y'all taking Percocet (oxycodone), it made me itch like crazy, I had to back down to Vicodin (hydrocodone), anybody else have that?

right between you pattipoo and douger at 5 1/2 wks...funny, when i saw the doc on wed. i kiddingly asked him for another Rx for yhe pain and figureed i'd get scolded coz he just refilled it last week.....he didn't even bat an eye, just said "no problem" and wrote it out....i was shocked since w/my family dr.,you have to be on your death bed before she'll even give antibiotics....
wondering if anyone else got a script for celebrex? i don't really want to be on this drug w/all it's controversy but he prescribed it...i don't think it helps at all and i know it's not for the new knee but for the other joints,,,just curious if anyone else is taking it? he also has me on 2000mg. (yes 2000) of vitamin C ...anybody get that also?
haven't started the bike yet , she tells me next week.......how painful is that? my hubby is getting as bored as i am and wants to do a day venture next week when he's got the week off......i want to go too (got to get the monthly casino fix) but i'm nervous being gone so long...the most i've been away from home was 3 hours. of course if the snow doesn't stop here in western pa.--all bets are off. have you all traveled yet?

MAD ITCH!! heck, yeah! Hate it. I wake up from chemically induced sleep, scratching. Kids, we've GOT to plan a mini vacation and meet up in some great resort just to hug, laugh and compare scars!

I took Celebrex for years...never could tell that it did any good. My Doc did not put me on it.

As for the bike....start out with the seat as high as possible (and believe me, it won't feel good to your seat either)....rock it back and forth...finally - go on over....it won't feel the best but it WILL loosen up and you'll be truckin'!!

Funny how the drugs hit people differently. Hydrocodone gets me wired. With the oxycodone, I have almost joined my dogs on the floor scratching. It couldn't be in a publicly accepted itching place like my arm. NO...It's in the place where you tell little boys to stop pulling on it or it will fall off!!
The other day, I drove to the coast and ended up driving around for a couple of hours. My leg got real stiff. But you know what??? It was worth it. It was a good mental health day. I'm just assuming that it will improve as we progress.
Vitamin C. I did a research paper on it in college and I've taken high dosages of it for years. No problem with the 2000mg. What your body doesn't need, you will pass.

Doug, I have the same this with Hydrocodone...it will take the pain away but leaves me wired. I can not fall to sleep if I take one prior to bedtime. So far, Im either pain killer free or one 5mg. tablet if I have done too much around the house. I am still on a prescription from January. I didnt ask two weeks ago for a refill. Im kinda taking myself off it since my Dr. is very ANTI-pain med, especially the opiates. But, I may ask for and "insurance blanket" refill next week when I go for my check up. Just and update, Im feeling great, used the snowblower today and cleaned the house, finishing a wood floor, and painting tomorrow. One thing for sure, after I take my sleeping tablet, its lights out. I used to be a late nighter, watching TV or playing solitare. Im looking forward to be back up to 100%
