Hello, I am new to this and have appreciated reading your posts so I joined up. I agree with the swelling getting better day 8. I’m trying to temper my activity with the walker, tempting to do more when feeling better after Melixicam dose. Had to beef up my nutrition for more protein yesterday and feeling much better now. Anyway, The wait to recovery is challenging being limited but looking forward to starting out patient PT next week. I thought I was having the Ant approach but looking at the incision finally, seems to be more lateral. Working through feelings about that. Scar bigger than I thought and was expecting no ROM limitations post op. Maybe that’s just urban legend. Lol . Working on my attitude. TY for reading.

Post-op I made my OS show me his hands, I wanted to see why he made such a big hole in me to work. Your mention of no ROM restrictions post-op and it being an urban legend is funny. What it comes down to is very few understand exactly what is done to us to perform this operation. It as all become so commonplace that it's talked about like having your teeth cleaned. In reality it's like having a traumatic accident but inside an operating room. We have our hip joint totally dislocated, that's an injury you would never hear about, you hear about shoulders and fingers but not hips. The fact that this even works and they can put us back together is amazing.

My scar seemed much bigger last year, it has shrunk and not that big at all and only can see if I have bathing suit on. At 71 I don't care about scars really.
Take it easy with PT, hips don't really need a lot of PT to recover, walking is probably your best friend. If your PT pushes you to do something that hurts don't do it.
Welcome to the group, so informative and uplifting, you will find a wealth of knowledge here.

@Tappinsoon Welcome to BoneSmart and the other side of surgery! What was the date of your surgery? We will make a signature for you.

Meanwhile I'll leave our recovery guidelines here for you.

Hip Recovery: The Guidelines
We are all different, as are the approaches to this recovery and rehab. The key is, “Find what works for YOU.“ Your doctor(s), physiotherapist(s) and BoneSmart are here to help. But you have the final decision as to what approach you use.

1. Don’t worry: Your body will heal all by itself. Relax, let it, don't try and hurry it, don’t worry about any symptoms now, they are almost certainly temporary
2. Control discomfort:
rest
ice
take your pain meds by prescription schedule (not when pain starts!)
3. Do what you want to do BUT
a. If it hurts, don't do it and don't allow anyone - especially a physical therapist - to do it to you
b. If your leg swells more or gets stiffer in the 24 hours after doing it, don't do it again.
4. PT or exercise can be useful BUT take note of this BoneSmart philosophy for sensible post op therapy
5. Here is a week-by-week guide for Activity progression for THRs
6. Access these pages on the website

Myth busting: on getting addicted to pain meds
Sleep deprivation is pretty much inevitable - but what causes it?

BIG TIP: Hips actually don't need any exercise to get better. They do a pretty good job of it all on their own if given half a chance. Trouble is, people don't give them a chance and end up with all sorts of aches and pains and sore spots. All they need is the best therapy which is walking and even then not to excess.

We try to keep the forum a positive and safe place for our members to talk about their questions or concerns and to report successes with their joint replacement surgery.

While members may create as many threads as they like in a majority of BoneSmart's forums, we ask that each member have only one recovery thread. This policy makes it easier to go back and review history before providing advice.

Happy One Month Anniversary!
I hope all is well. Let us know how you're doing when you have time, we'd love to hear from you!
Have a great 4th!
