I am trying to decide if a post op 1-week cruise/vacation at 11 weeks is reasonable to plan. At week 6 now my wife still has pain, uses Tramadol/Ibuprufen, and the Iceman machine, and really has not walked alot but is starting to get stronger. But hopefully this will increase and her stamina will grow. Are there any in the community with vacation stories/advice in this timeframe for a PKR? Thanks!

Hubbie, cruises seem like a relaxing vacation option, but truth is there is a lot of walking involved. If you don't live in the port city, you have to fly or drive there. Then walk (and stand) through the ship's check in. Once aboard, everywhere you go involves walking the corridors or going from deck to deck. Then there are the ports of call!

I frankly think 11 weeks would be pushing it for this type of trip. I suppose if you did enough planning and arranging for wheel chairs instead of some of the walking, it might work. And I guess you could have meals brought to your room if needed.

But to me, your dear wife needs to be physically able to really ENJOY such a trip....not just tolerate it. That means at least 6 months out from surgery in my book.

What does she say? Is there a reason you must go at this time?

I totally agree with Jamie. Why waste your money on a vacation that cannot be totally enjoyed at this point. I would wait. A cruise sounds great but would your wife really enjoy it? She'll be so tired. Even if she's rolled around in a wheelchair, she's still up and moving when she needs to be resting and icing her knee.

Thanks for the inputs, which are helpful. I had planned to see if she was up to the amount of walking and was keeping it quite not to disappoint her. But I really didn't know if recovery pace would allow it. We went on a cruise out of home port of Baltimore at beginning of June during 3 months prior to PKR and she enjoyed it. But post-op i would think it would be a matter of stamina. But if still needing iceman, then its out. Thanks!

Hey Hubbie i agree there is alot of walking and getting off the boat etc.......Maybe push it back a little to make sure you can both have fun...........Im glad shes doing ok .....Im glad you all had a great time on your last cruise and no doubt more to come in the future....................)

I was back at work at 7 weeks and felt great. still stiff and some pain but not much. I would plan to go crusin its a vacation you can always rest when need be.

I would WAIT!!!! Why take the chance of having yur wife in any unnecessary pain/discomfort! She's probably worry on every port you enter! You two have to ask if its feasible! ((:0)

I would say wait, too. We went to my daughter's 13 hours away at about 11 weeks. I didn't really feel ready, but it was the only time we'd be able to go. It worked out great because we mostly just stayed at the house and when we went to the Henry Ford museum, I rented a scooter, which was fun. The day we went to Greenfield Village was a little scary and exhausting, but fun. We sat in model T's, horse drawn carriages, and the train that goes all the way around. We skipped going to the zoo. Ever since surgery, I thought this time I'd be able to walk without pain and really enjoy the zoo, but we all knew I couldn't do it.

So, if it doesn't matter when you go on the cruise, I'd say wait. At 11 weeks, I was lacking strength and stamina and needed lots of rest, icing and elevation.

Why the rush? As it stands she doesn't really look as if she'll be ready by then. I'd put it off to 5 or 6 months as Jamie suggested.
