Crossing legs

HI, I also had my THR on 3/34/09!! I have cheated and crossed my left...non operated...foot over my right foot. I made sure to keep the right leg in line. I have to agree with you..not crossing my legs is a hard thing to NOT do. LOL.
Hope your recovery is going great.

T-Mike, how much longer were you told to avoid the crossing? At my 6 week check-up my doctor said all restrictions are lifted except the 90 degree for another month.

The last I heard it was 3 - 6 months - which seemed somewhat excessive. I do go in to the doctor this Friday so, maybe he will release me from some of the restrictions.

Kat, I have also cheated albeit accidently. I catch myself attempting to cross them as I am stretched out on the couch or bed so I un cross. It is just comfortable for me to cross at the ankles.

I went back last week for my 12 week check-up he said do what I want, just use common sense. So I try to do something and if it hurts or feels uncomfortable I stop.

Interesting to see the different medical advisories. I'm 18 weeks post-op and my surgeon said to NEVER cross my legs the rest of my life and to keep my leg in as straight a line as possible, not to let the hip go out or in to any extent.

Welcome to BoneSmart, Janetgail. You have made an excellent observation....all surgeons have their own individual ideas and ways of doing things. In the same way, I think another important component is for patients to know their own bodies and listen to them. What may work for one person might not work for another.

Hope to see you posting again!

No problem at all crossing my legs at the ankles, but I was never a big leg crosser above the knees, my thighs are too large.

My legs are too big too, so I usually 'cross' them by balancing one heel on the other foot.

Hi all, Funny how certain memories stand out. I had a terrible time accidentally crossing my ankles during the first few weeks after surgery, even sometimes when I was at PT--drove them crazy. Thankfully, after a month, all restriction were lifted. It took me about 3 months to cross my right (operated) leg over my left at the knee. And still at over 8 months, crossing right over left is not nearly as easy as left over right. Again, I think it is due to years of not using. I do remember the first time I could cross my leg, I was cheering as it was a small feat.

Cant imagine having a Dr tell me that I could never cross my legs--think I would question that one.

Happy Mother's Day all,
Laurie

I do remember thinking that would be so hard to avoid. I started practicing before my hip replacment. My doc lifted everything at 12 weeks. I always found if it was forbidden, it really hurt to try to do it or at least was not comfortable.
I too would question the doc who said never again. I only heard that about running and there was a tiny bit of hesitation in my doc's voice on that one as I was so very disappointed.

Great news, T-Mike! You are progressing nicely!

I swear I was crossing my legs "in utero" -- unless I'm sitting with my legs tucked up under me, I ALWAYS cross at the knee, in one direction or the other! The lack of that restriction was among the many reasons I chose direct anterior approach for my THR. (I knew there's no way I'd have been able to abide by it!)

As for not crossing for the rest of your life--sorry, but that doc & I would definitely not see eye to eye!

Most babies do, PRG!
