Hi all, I,m as you may know just over 1 month post TKR, bending to a little over 90 and walking well. I do some bending and stretching with the leg but have not had any time with a physio-therepist, is this normal? Should I contact them or is it the other way round? and should I have seen one by now? Cheers Klinger.

Some where someone taught you some exercises to do? In the hospital. I like to have professional PT because even though I know the drill, I am more diligent under guidance. My DR said 5 times a week and that really is a lot, so I'll go 3 times now and then probably taper to 2. They have some equippment I do not have and can answer my questions as I go. But as my PT says, the basic exercises are going to be my "bread & butter" of my rehab and those I can do every day, at home or on his table. If insurance/$ is the challange ask about a payment plan or self pay discount. Even 1 week might teach you something new. Just a thought. But human determination counts for a lot too.

I don't know how it is done 'over there', but in 'the states' the OS usually sets that up at discharge from the hospital. I think you should look into it soon as postponing will tend to make things, certainly longer and possibly more difficult. At least thats my two cents.

My doctor wrote a prescription for PT at my 2 week check up. The PT determined the frequency and such. PT took care of okaying things with my insurance, too.

I got a RX slip for PT from the DR when I left the hospital. In my state i think it has to be prescribed. PT won't see you without a script from doc. So go back and ask your OS for the referral.

I agree. Here in Kansas, the doctor must make an "order" for the therapy. It is a document that indicates how many weeks, how many times a week, and some goals for the therapy. Normal for TKR is 4 weeks with the therapist 2-3 times each week. I'm sure all of this paperwork is needed so that insurance will pay their portion of the cost. It may not work the same way in the UK, but I would think your first step would be to contact your surgeon. It's my opinion too that your recovery will go more smoothly with some type of therapy. Especially in outpatient therapy they really push you, which is a good thing.

Hi Klinger, where you been? Yes you should get a referal for physio. That's the trouble with National Health they never give you enough physio. Neither my Nan, Mum, or Aunt had hardly any after their hip replacements and they were/are not doing as well as they should, years later. So push for it if you can. You should be able to get some from the hospital you were at, or if possible go private.

If it doesn't happen, go to Google and search for TKR exercises.

Good luck, Sue

Sue has a great idea. If you can't get enough PT officially, I'm sure a Google search will help or we can tell you some of our home exercises. It would be best to get them online and print out instructions with pictures if you can find a site that has that.

Thanks all for your input, I,m going down to the Docs today and see what I can find out, cheers Klinger
