Hi all.i have a question,I have been getting cortozone shots now for a year and a half in my right knee.i know I need a total knee replacement ( iam petrified of pain meds and any kind of surgery) although the shots work for about 3 months I know that this is not going to get any better. On Monday I saw my orthopedic dr for yet another shot I did ask him how long after the cortozone can I get a total knee replacement? He said 6 weeks.now I know that iam not a doctor ...but that seems a little to soon as I feel I would be at risk for infection. Can anyone give me some information on this? Also the Dr is affiliated with the hospital for special surgery in New York City, which is suppose to be a very good hospital. So I would think that he would know what he is talking about. Any help would be appreciated.

My os said three monthes between last injection and surgery

Thanks haley4 and fla granny for both of your replies.that has been what I have been led to believe 3 months.although I trust my doctor i don't want to have an increased risk for infection if I decide to do this within 6 weeks of my last cortozone shot.every article I have every read said at least 3 months.now I'am even more confused.

bottomshollow thanks for the info also much appreciated

When I was getting ready for surgery because the shots were only lasting a month plus, I asked how soon after a shot could I have surgery. The arthritis doctor didn't recommend it sooner than the 3 months , but, the surgeon told me what you were told. The arthritis doctor didn't want it sooner because of risk of infection. Surgeon didn't mention concern. So, I scheduled my surgery and turned out being well past my 3 months. Good luck to you.

Another question....please! When I was scheduled last year for a total knee replacemet(had another health issue) so I did not get it done.my surgeon WITHOUT TAKEN ANY BLOOD TEST put me on iron pills. I thought this was strange I did question the nurse and her reply was yes he sometimes does that. Now I have been reading this message board for quite sometime and I have NEVER seen anyone take iron pills BEFORE surgery.is this normal? Did anyone else experience this?

I didn't take iron pills either before or after surgery. After both surgeries my iron was a little low, but just eating a healthy diet brought it up to normal without any pills after my first knee, and I am sure it will be the same this time. Iron pills can be constipating, so I was glad to not take them. I wouldn't think it would be necessary before surgery unless you were already anemic.

Thanks ronsgirl I have Never seen anything about iron pills before surgery

@Mylexigirl I did take iron pills before and after, but I have a tendency to borderline anemia at times. I know even with taking them my iron was low post surgery. You can lose blood during surgery even if internally. Ask the question on the reason and for your levels. You would rather have iron pills than a transfusion, at the other extreme.

@Mylexigirl

Part of my medication while in hospital was an iron pill. I'm assuming it was because of blood loss during surgery? I did not take it before or after.

Hello @Mylexigirl -- I had a LTKR on January 11 and was on 65 mg iron pre-op for two months before my surgery, and am continuing on it at my doctor's urging.
