Hi Everyone,

I've noticed that I'm having more problems with pain in the past week or so. At 7 weeks post op. I did my usual walk yesterday (after a day of rest), and my new hip ached a lot more than usual (this has been coming on for about ten days). I can localise the pain at the pririformis (particlularly the attachment at the trochanter), and down the femur for about ten inches.

If I use a crutch the pain diminishes significantly, and I need to use it after a maximum of ten minutes 'free' walking. I don't have much of a limp any more, even crutchless.

The pain is a dull ache, and is not very strong, but did wake me at 6 this morning. Mechanically all seems well, less limping, and no eversion/inversion of the foot.

No sign of fever in terms of temperature rise or reddening in the area.

I'm surprised that I still have pain at seven weeks, and the 6 a.m brain rats are whispering 'stem rotation' in my nervous ear.

Any advice gratefully received.

Dawn's left hand is in the sky; the early birds are celebrating their worms in song, and life is very sweet.

Enjoy it all

Nick

Hi Nick,

I'm sorry to hear this. Have you been doing more exercising or walking lately? Did you just recently stop pain meds or have you been off them?

Thanks Melissa,
No more walking/exercising than usual. Pain meds are always variable as I have gout, but pain in thigh definitely has increased.

I wouldn't worry - it's more likely to be a tendonitis or similar. Very common at this stage. Go back to your physical therapist and get his/her opinion and some massage and advice.

Thanyou Jo, I knew I could rely on you for knowledgeably calming advice.

Nick! Sounds like your prosthesis is really knitting into your bones which is a very GOOD thing! :)

Sorry to hear you're having pain, Nick. Hope you get it worked out soon! I'm at 10 weeks, and I've noticed a little aching in my thigh lately - just attributed it to exercising more - bike riding and using the stair stepper.

I found my aches and pains increased when I did one of two things:

1) Nothing.

2) Too much.

I found I was in less discomfort if I exercised moderately "every" day, as much of the time as I could during the day. Even now (17 weeks), sitting at my desk for long periods of time is a little difficult and so I get up and walk and stretch as much as I can.

Most excellent! And funny to boot!

I have noticed the same thing with my knees for years. As a matter of fact i did no exercise yesterday and woke up with my knee really hurting.

Nick
At 4 weeks after my hip replacement, I was walking down the stairs and had the worst pain ever. It was worse than anything right after surgery. I had picked up the pace of exercise too much. It took a few weeks and some aggressive pt (their torture massage) to calm it down.
