Had my physical and labs and am cleared for surgery next week. Will have to be at the hospital at 530 am on Tuesday morning. Procedure is going to be minimal invasive with about one 4-5" incision on the front of each hip. Guess the nervousness will really set in this weekend, but since I had to discontinue the Naproxen this week, I am now starting to feel the full effect of the worn out joints. Doctor is still telling me I should be back at work in about 2-3 weeks, so I will keep my fingers crossed. Hospital stay should be about 3 days if all goes well.

Bob,
Good luck next week. I can't wait to hear about how everything is going for you. Be sure to post and let us know how you are.

Hi Bob
I will be thinking of you on tuesday. Good luck.
Tracey

Best of luck to you on your upcoming surgery. After all is said and done, you will find it is the best thing you've ever done for yourself. You'll be in my thoughts and prayers.

Bob-
We'll be thinking bout you on Tuesday. Stay busy don't be too nervous, get it done. It will be the best thing that you have done for yourself. Short term goals:
1. Tuesday 0530, show up.
2. Next 3 days, pain meds AND stool softeners.
Take care, - Gary

Best wishes on your surgery, Bob. That I-really-need-the-naproxen-cause-the-Tylenol-just don't-cut-it-! pain should go away after the THRs. You'll hurt in other ways for awhile, but it is so great to walk & sit & get up without wincing! I took 8-hour tylenol (well, ok, the store brand) for the month before surgery - and it was only lasting about 4 hrs. by the week before my THR. Can't imagine what double the pain is for you but you can look forward to double the relief, right?

Bob,
In the recovery room you will be amazed at how much better you feel already! The first days are sore and tight but no where near the pain you are living in right now.
I will be 2 weeks on Tues. Yay! time for staples to go away. I had friends visit this weekend that could not believe the difference in my color and face just because of lack of pain.
5:30 stinks but at least you will be all nestled in your room by afternoon beginning your recovery. ;) Every day gets a little better and a little closer to having your old life back.
We are so fortunate to have something that a surgeon can fix.

Best wishes,
Donna

Thanks, glad to hear you are doing so well. Hopefully I wont have any staples (at least thats what they tell me now). Thanks to everybody for all your kind thoughts.

Bob,
hi. I read your thread because I just got my clearance and labs and tests yesterday. I'm scheduled for 3 weeks from today. You - might be done already by now!
Curious to hear how it went. Hope you are doing allright right now. What hospital? (They told me no staples either, but approach is posterior.)

Thanks to everybody for the thoughts and prayers. I got home today. Surgery went well, I got in before the doors opened and had to wait a few minutes. Was a bit nervous during the preps but I figured I was in it for the long haul. Met with the anesthesiologist and he told me it was going to be a general, that was fine by me. Surgeon came in about 730 and asked me if I had any questions, not really, especially at this point. Somewhere along the way I think they gave me something and I was out. When I woke up I was in recovery just a little bit clueless to everything that had just gone on. Things that first day were somewhat of a blur, I know I didn't get much sleep that whole week.

For sure I know I am blessed to have my own personal PT, my wife Mary. She pretty much ran the show and I was very glad for that. The first PT that showed up on the second day was young and I'll have to say pretty clueless. She tried to get me up out of bed and we didnt have too much success with that. My wife wanted a wheelchair to sit me in and this lady told her that they didnt have any. HMMM????? When the surgeon came by she pressed the issue and they were able to find a "Jerry Chair" which she used to sit me up in the room. Later that day we met Robin who was everything the first one was not. She and my wife got along very well. We did some walking over the next couple of days and while it felt like I was moving slow, they both kept telling me I was doing well.

The surgeon cleared me to come home today, I couldn't take another sleepless night in that room. So far so good. I'm still very stiff and up till today was constipated which ended this afternoon. My appetite has been off somewhat, I attribute that to the hospital food. It should get better over the next few days. I'll post when I can and will answer any questions. Take care, Bob

Glad to hear the surgery went well and you are home. I remember how happy I was to be home.
Let us know how you are doing.

Welcome home, Bob! Glad all went well. Will be excited to hear all about your progress these next few weeks.

Great to hear from you Bob. Every day gets just a little better. Being home makes a world of difference no more 5am wake ups. ;)

Welcome to the other side and fast healing to you,

Donna

Donna you just reminded me of those lab people coming in at 5am all smiley and wishing me a good morning.
Judy

I know as I said -Not a morning person. Igor the vampire would walk in my room at 5am and flip on the overhead lights. Good grief you could at least give some warning. Needless to say he did not see my cheerful side. ;)

Great job, Bob! You made it! And wonderful you have a cheerleader to push you on. My regards to her as well.

Just a quick follow on. Today seems to be a breakthrough day, I can ambulate through the house without any crutches though my wife yells at me for it. Pain is tapering off, swelling seems to be going down as well. I have put myself on extra strength Tylenol as the only pain med. I still need the crutches going up and down stairs and standing for a long time takes its toll, but still very pleased so far. I'm at 10 days post op.

Hi Bob, so glad I found this site. I too had bi-lats on 8/26. Today is 7 weeks post op and I still have discomfort and can't sit for more than 2 hours. I start work tomorrow more for financial reasons than feeling ready.

I don't use a cane anymore and somedays are better than others. Still take pain meds at night and Advil during the day.

I was wondering what you were told as to when to expect to feel normal again. My OS just tells me everyone is different. Oh by the way, I am 53 and was in decent shape to start with. Couldn't get out of bed day one because I lost a lot of blood and needed 4 pints transfused. Than I kept spiking fevers for 3 weeks and had more blood removed for testing and cultures, so I feel like I lost a lot of recovery time. I can't believe you were home so soon. I spent 5 days in the hospital and 2 weeks in an Acute Rehab Center.

Would love an update from you.

Thanks.
