Hoping your knee is already better Clara! Pre-Birthday Wishes & Hugs to you-!! You are so precious- and BoneSmart is so fortunate to have your smiling face and encouraging posts here daily! Hope your trip is spectacular and your Birthday is over the top! LOVE YOU!!!

Awee well have the best time you can for the time you have. Have some fresh coconut milk and a tres leches for me!

Short trip but it will be sweet! I know you'll have a wonderful time. Happy Birthday ahead of time.
It was a reasonable thing to use the spray on your scar.......you couldn't have known it would be so irritating. Hopefully the redness will dissipate.

@mamazipp Thank you for the birthday wishes, it has been 50 years since I celebrated a birthday in Cuba, wow, hard to believe, it is so sad that they make it so difficult and expensive for us to go back for a visit.

I used Caledryl on the rash and it feels and looks better, live and learn the hard way, that should be the TKR slogan:snork:

I used 50 spf on my scar (and whole leg) the first summer, but I still use 50 eveeywhere. You'd never know it because I'm very tan. I never sprayed it though. I wonder if that new fresh skin is having a reaction to a chemical that's in the spray. Check the bottle for PABA.

Have a happy birthday and a fabulous time with the family I remember my knee burning in the sun I was riding in my razor in the desert and eventually said to my husband switch sides the sun is burning my knee. I had forgotten to put sunscreen on but I have olive skin my dad was portuguese so I didnt think I would burn to much. Lesson learnt. Have a blast in Cuba.

Thanks for the warning on spray sun screen. I wouldn't have even thought it would have bothered a healed incision,

I hope that you have a great time with your family celebrating your birthday! You deserve some vacation time (even if it's only a few days).

Clara, have a great time in Cuba. Mit will be fantastic to celebrate your birthday there. How old were you when your family left?
I'm sure you will be bringing lots of supplies with you. We were asked to bring lots of drug store items, etc. , otc medicines and things of that nature. It was very expensive for the flight from Miami to Cuba, outrageously so. I'm hoping the commercial airlines will lower the fares, but of course they probably won't.

@mamazipp love the new picture, pretty!!!!

I had just turned 11 when we left Cuba, yes I am taking some medicine, Ibuprofen, Tylenol, for adults and children, cold medicine, vitamins, Imodium, etc...the problem is that we are limited by the amount of things we can take, we are only allowed to take 64 lbs total without paying an arm and a leg for each additional pound over the allowed. We are hoping to possibly go back next year and stay a little longer.

The commercial airlines started flying to Havana out of Orlando, Ft. Lauderdale, Miami but not out of Tampa yet, but yes it is expensive, in addition to our airfare we had to get a special Cuban visa because we are flying with our American passport and that alone was $229.00 each and it can only be used once, but it is worth it to be able to spend a little time with the family.

What a wonderful way to celebrate your birthday, with family you've missed for so long! I hope you have a great time and that knee behaves. I can't imagine TKRs are part of Cuban health care.

@KarriB I think most probably have to live with the arthritis pain. .

My cousin's husband did have THR, but he was on a waiting list for a very long time. My cousin had to bring their own bed sheets for the hospital bed and all of his meals, and who know what she had to do to find pain meds. It is certainly not easy. Sometimes when I am complaining about something silly, I stop and remind myself how blessed I am to live in this country.

You are so right, Clara. We complain about this country, but when we look at others, we realized how blessed America is. I can't imagine having to wait years to have a replacement and then to have to take care of all the food and domestics! Wow, us single people would really have it rough there. Family life has to be very close there because you need each other. Here, we can go weeks or even months and not see family members. What a shame. I know your trip will be worth every penny! How long is the flying time?

@sistersinhim you are right, there the family and even neighbors become family and everyone pitches in and help each other, that is one thing we can use a little more of in this country and with technology we loose more of the human touch every day, people don't call each other to wish happy birthday anymore, they send text or do it on Facebook, it is sad. I try to teach my grandkids that they need to get on the phone call me instead of texting me, its not easy, but if I don't answer their texts eventually they call me, also anytime the family is over for dinner, no cell phones are allowed at the table, they already know the rules so I don't have to remind them, lol

The flight is around 90 minutes from Tampa, not bad.

I love your family table rule about electronics. I had do that one Thanksgiving when son was in high school.

Yes, we are so blessed in US with access to healthcare. I would love to hear more about Cuba's system when you have time.

I hope your trip is wonderful . Can't wait to see a pic.

You are teaching your grandkids the correct way. Without those phones people might actually talk to each other! You can go just about anywhere and all you can see are the majority of the younger folks texting or talking on the phone. What's really scary is looking behind you in the rear-view mirror and the driver behind you is talking on the phone. I try to get into the other lane when that happens!

Thanks, Clara.
In Canada, in my province, there is a 12 month waiting list for knee replacement. and 12-18 months for hip replacement.
If you fall and break your hip they will do a replacement then. I guess if you're in severe pain in your hip it would be better to throw yourself off a bike and break it!
Also 18 month wait for MRI, 12 month for ultrasound unless pregnant or emerg.

Insufficient investment in both training mds, investing in medical infrastructure and equipment, staffing hospitals adequately. People cant find a family doctor, who is the gatekeeper to any other specialist. If you have a family doctor and don't like him or her, you can't change because, since there is a shortage you are considered not needing a MD.
And I could go on and on re lack of respect for nurses, and patients, for that matter.

We don't need to bring sheets, but you would want to bring your own food!
