I'm a 39 year old 6'2 280lbs, played sports most of my life and am or was very active until finding out I need a double hip replacement. Is there a prosthesis for a larger person or heavier person on the market. I'm sorry for asking a stupid question but am still getting over the fact thaty I need a DHR at sush a young age.

Honestly I dont think I would worry about what to choose the Dr will probably uses what ever he usually uses.........Make sure you trust your surgeon thats the most important.........But Im sure others will help you out...Im a knee so I wouldnt want to say more...., you'll be back to your sports in no time..............I hope you keep us posted............) I wish you the best of luck........

Welcome, TIMH--and please know that there is no such thing as a stupid question!

There are many variations & combinations of hip replacement hardware out there. Lucky for you, your surgeon is the expert and will choose the best option for your own specific body type, lifestyle & medical condition. Choose an experienced surgeon you trust and leave the "hardware" choice to them--you just concentrate on surgery prep and then recovery. We're here to listen, support and share anytime!

Hi, Tim, and welcome to BoneSmart.

They said it, I'll repeat it - choosing the right prosthesis is a skilled business and it's not the patient's job. That's what you pay your OS the big bucks for! But just to reassure you a) most hip prostheses are designed to cope with 300+lbs as they have a range of stems going standard, heavy, extra heavy and so on. So it doesn't really matter what type of implant you have so long as the surgeon selects the correct one of the range and that's his job. His selection will also take into account your life style.

Read this post How to choose a surgeon and a prosthesis. Lots of info there for you.

Tim! Relax!! That's what these doctors get the BIG BUCKS for deciding!!!! YOU take care!!! (:)0)

Let me just tell you that I love my year old hip. You've already heard that the doc will pick out the best one for you

I agree with what everyone else said...your surgeon will base his decision on what he feels is best for you. My surgeon waited until the week of because he wanted a very up to date X-Ray and then partly based his decision of what would fit the best and therefore have the least risk of slipping or wearing faster. Just worry about what you can control and then sit back enjoy the fact that you're going to feel SO much better! And welcome to BoneSmart!

Hi, Tim! Welcome to BoneSmart! We're here for you whenever you have one of those questions or concerns. I agree with the others that you need to be sure you pick an experienced, excellent surgeon and then let them decide what's best for you. We've had folks on the forum of all sizes and activity levels who do just fine. So relax!!!

Tim, another Tim here. Parrott'ing what everyone else said, your OS should know!
I was hell bent on going ceramic for the longest time. not a bad choice, but learned along the way that my size MAY limit it's effectiveness. A tad smaller than you, am I (6'1", 225).
I chose, with the expertise of my doctors, a large ball Metal on Metal (Titanium). The larger ball makes it less prone to dislocation, & range of motion is sometimes increased. Still being very active, that's what I wanted.
Research THR's on the internet, and ask lots of questions to your doctors. Also, dont be afraid to ask for second opinions. This is a huge deal, and you need to be 100% comfortable with what product & procedure is best for you.
Good luck Tim! I get mine on September 28th. Super stoked!
