I am 35 years old and was diagnosed with OA about 5 years ago after suffering pelvis problems during and after my three pregnancies. About three years ago my doctor did some research and referred me to a very good OS who suggested that in time i would need joint replacement and because of my age resurfacing would be the best option. I have been monitored regularly but past six months life has been very hard and yesterday i went back to see surgeon who agreed time was right for surgery. Initially we were talking resurfacing but my husband mentioned as we were leaving that i have skin allergies to nickel and suddenly the surgeon said not to risk resurfacing as there maybe a 20-30% chance of allergic reaction, i would therefore need THR and the new ceramic on ceramic prosthesis would be used. I am just a bit thrown as i have spent 5 years gathering info on resurfacing and listening to how much better it is for younger patients, thinking how lucky i will be not to have a THR at this age and now im booked in for a THR. My surgeon is highly regarded by everyone i have spoken to so i trust the decision i just need to get my head round the change. I would love to hear from anyone who has any info on the new creamic on ceramic THR or anyone who has had similar experience. Also i have booked the surgery for end of July as its easier for me to get help with kids and cope without driving during the 6 week summer holidays, hopefully i will be fine by the time kids go back in september. Any advice on recovery would also be appreciated.

Don't let it worry you, Tracey. Ceramic is good and is fast establishing itself as the prosthesis of choice for people in your age group. You will read stuff about breakages and cracking but the evidence so far is that its long term outcomes far exceed those of the conventional materials.

Which hospital are you going to?

I too have a sensitivity to a variety of metals and that was a major concern from the get go. Then, in my research, discovered the Oxinium prosthesis by Smith & Nephew and along with my surgeon agreed it would be best for me. Rather than take any chance I had the Oxinium knee replacements on 11-26-07 and they are really doing great. Can you believe this, I can bend over without my knees popping and cracking and hurting anymore. If you haven't been to this site, it has a lot of good info: broken link removed: https://www.strongasanox.com/default.html
Apparently, it is better for younger patients because the ceramic does not cause as much friction and will last longer. They do caution us that if we fall there is a risk that the ceramic can shatter, but the traditional metal knees can dislodge the cement too.
So, bottom line, no matter which knee you get, you want to avoid falling always!
And remember, therapy is important! In fact it is the key to recovery!
Take care, hope it all goes well.

Oh, I know Sarah well! She is a world renowned hip surgeon and definitely top drawer stuff! There are few surgeons in Europe that know as much about hips and hip revisions as she does. She's a regular tartar to work for but that's all part of her demand for perfection. She is one of the consultant surgeons at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital where I worked and truth to tell, if I ever needed a hip replacement, she would be my first choice. Now take a note of this for when a theatre nurse tells you a particular surgeon would be her first choice, that means a lot!!

Hi There, I had THR and my doc put in ceramic on ceramic back in March of 2007. I too, was worry about breakage but my doc reassured me that in 2003 they have improved them greatly and it is very rare nowadays after 2003 of this material breaking or cracking. I have thus far very good lucky with my prothesis. I will have to replace my other hip next year in 2009 and will be looking at using again the ceramic on ceramic.

Hi Tracey:

Glad that I could be of help and encouragement to you. I just also wanted to say that we are both the same age. I had my THR during the month that I turned 35 last year in March. Let us know how you turned out with your op in July. If you need to talk or ask questions about recovery, don't hesitate to contact me. I wish I knew about this website last year before my surgery. It would have given me peace of mind. I am glad to know that I am not the only one going through this experience and that everyone is experiencing the same feelings as I did. That has given me some comfort. I am glad that I stumbled onto this website myself.

Take care,

Paula
