Just had my pre-op yesterday for June 26th surgery for my right knee replacement.

Had my left knee replaced almost three years ago and was surprised this time around that I was told that I could take my Celebrex right up to the day before surgery. I thought that you had to stop taking it the week before.

Almost wondering whether I heard this correctly?

Would there be any benefit if I didn't take it? I'm feeling quite anxious and don't want to do anything wrong. Hope my nerves settle down this week.

My surgery originally was to be August but got moved up to June so I don't feel ready.. Lucy

Hi Lucy. Well things change with time but if you're doubting your memory, I suggest you phone in and sk for confirmation.

I believe the original reason for stopping NSAIDs was because they had a tendency to thin the blood but these days they know that one or two NSAIDs don't have this issue so are safe to take. But please don't take my word for it! Ask for confirmation.

My OS told me to stop ALL nsaids-- INCLUDING Celebrex-- 7 days prior. He said he didn't want me to have thin blood. My surgery is this Wednesday, and I can't wait to be out of pain!!!

Thanks. Will confirm to be sure. Amy best wishes for this Wednesday. I'll be a week behind you.

My surgeon said I could take my regular ibuprofen up to the day before surgery, just don’t take it the day of.

Surgeon wanted me to take a break from Celebrex for 2 weeks before surgery since I will go back on it after surgery. This was just to give my stomach a break. I'm still taking it - have my pre-op tomorrow - TKR surgery 6/25/19. Will stop tomorrow if required - but cannot function well without it. Can't wait for new knee!

I don't mind stopping it for the week if necessary. Am going to call the surgeon tomorrow and just confirm that it's okay to take up to the day before surgery. That was my understanding from the pre-op. I'm one day after you.

So glad I called the OS this morning. Told me to discontinue celebrex a week prior to surgery. At the pre-op they told me I could take up to day before. Thx. Good advice from Bonesmart. Lucy

Good luck with your rtkr. I see you had your left done in 2016.
I had my left as well in 2016 and my right June 6 2019.
Good to be on the healing side.
Sending good thoughts your way.

This is an interesting question, and I'll share my experience. I just had my TKR 4 wks ago and was told to take my Celebrex every day except the day of surgery. I had surgery on a Tuesday but was instructed to take TWO Celebrex on Monday. My surgeon's protocol then is to have you take TWO Celebrex the days you're in the hospital, for a total of 4 consecutive days post-op. Then I am not allowed to take it for a month.

This is because there is new research showing NSAIDS might interfere with bone healing. Since I had a press-fit implant, the bone needs to grow in around the stems. They don't want to take a chance any NSAIDS might interfere, and my PT said they wouldn't even want me taking steroids to reduce my severe swelling for the same reason. From the reading I've done in the last few weeks post-op, there seems to be no consensus about any of this Celebrex cocnroversy. We have seen minor amounts of steroids cause delayed healing in my son after 2 broken bones though, so I don't want to take any chances on ANY medication that "might" do cause an issue. Luckily, I can get by without the Celebrex, as my other knee isn't as bad.

RockyGirl4 Interesting how things as far as celebrex are concerned very different with each OS. I am somewhat dependent on celebrex as I have so much arthritis in various joints of my body. Hope it doesn't get too bad this week coming up to surgery. Thanks for responding. L

I have Left TKR scheduled for Aug 13 and in some of the pre-op papers the dr. gave me it shows he wants me to start taking Celebrex 5 days BEFORE the surgery and for 30 days after. I'm currently on Dicolfenac, so it will be interesting to see if I stop that 5 days out and immediately switch to Celebrex.

I don't take Celebrex currently, but the pain management protocol after my surgery will be the On-Q pump, Gabapentin, Celebrex and oxycodone (if needed). I don't know how long they plan on keeping me on the Celebrex.

Another interesting (and curious) piece of information......At PT yesterday, I was discussing the Arthrotec I started taking 6 days ago with my PT, as she thinks that's why my flexion is improving rapidly the last week. She had already assumed the surgeon had me wait until the 4-wk mark to begin an anti-inflammatory because of the new research around Celebrex impeding bone growth after TKR. She was well aware of the information/data and is an Orthopedics PT specialist (extra certifications). She knows other Drs who are following the same "wait a month" protocol.

Regardless of everyone's OPINION about PTs and their usefulness following joint replacement, I felt better avoiding Celebrex those first 4 wks, knowing others in the medical community are aware of the new (even if controversial) research. Personally, I'm glad I erred on the side of caution until the jury is in and ALL surgeons are on the same page. This is the part of medicine I dislike, as it leaves us curious and distrusting of who/what to think.

My doc did not prescribe Celebrex. Tylenol and oxicodon as needed.
