NJ, you have to do something to tire yourself and reading, watching TV, being on the computer are pretty good things to bore yourself to sleep!

However, let me ask you - have you any pain, any worries, any other problems like being constipated or being able to cope? These can all interfere with sleep. Do you actually ever feel tired or sleepy?

Finally, have you talked with your doctor about this? He could prescribe you a light sleep inducer that would help you drop off.

Hi:

I have been using vicoden for several months as well. I haven't had me knee replacement yet. One of the things I have noticed is I can not take the vicoden before bed time. For some reason this drug is a stimulant for me. Sleep is out of the question. I mentioned this to my brother and he said that the few times he was on this drug it made him hyper as well. I have good pain management right now if I take my drugs 4 hours or so before bedtime and I can sleep then.

This is just how it effects me. I am not a doctor. Please use this info as you see fit.

Thanks

Kirk

the sleeplessness you are going through is normal. I wa up for hours and had a difficult time actually getting comfortable. I would finally crash around 4-5 AM...

finally, right when I was to go back to school to teach, I gavein and had my OD prscribe me some Ambien. Itgot my sleep schedule back on track...

do not fight it and do not worry---it isnormal for TKR people to have some sleep problems.

Lou,,,,,,,,take yourself outside for a walk when you feel strong enough! You shouldn't be IN bed until
You're ready to SLEEP! A healthy snack wouldn't hurt either! Warm milk too?
Happy Dreams!!!! :)

Glad you called your doc and the Ambien will be coming. I was on pain meds for 6 weeks and toward the end, I had trouble sleeping much also. I took hydrocodone the first 3 weeks and then Darvoset. There were lots of us up at night back then roaming our houses and talking online. I think it's a fairly common problem. The good news is your sleep will come back eventually when you are off the prescription pain meds (or when you use a sleep aid like Ambien).

Just be aware that Ambien can cause some funky
Side effects!!!!(Hallucinations,etc!!!)

Really....now THAT wouldn't be fun....I've known people who took it, but they never had any side effects.

NJLOU,
After my BTKR, my OS prescribe Ambien for me but it gave me some crazy dreams. She switch me to another pill but it did not help. So then we tried Ambien CR and that worked like a champ. I would highly recommend you ask for Ambien CR.

God Bless,
Rick

Yeah!!! NO ONE needs suicidal tendencies!!!
Another bizarre, totally scarey side effect! :(

I was off my pain meds in a week. I don't like it. I took some Ibuprofen and some Tylenol (500mg x 2) and was Ok with that. But the lack of sleep was incredible. It took maybe 8 weeks with the odd day where I did sleep OK since I was exhausted. But I found that 2 whiskey drinx were the tickey just before bed......zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

I always knew that I like Canadian Crown Royal for a very good reason!

Hey, ref - trust you to chip in with that! How are you doing?

Judles - the odd small shot shouldn't be a problem. It's the regular imbibing that's off limits. After all, it has been known for a tot of whiskey or brandy or a bottle of stout to be prescribed!

Add to my "to do" list: trip to the liquor store for 'sleep medicine' LOL
Blessings of good sleep to all!

Seriously worked like a charm. Although I was only taking Tylenol and Ibuprofen after 2 weeks so no pain meds were in the mix. I had 2 fingers with some water and 2 ice cubes.....2 times..... and zzzzzzzzzzz like a baby. A happy scottish baby!

If Ambien doesn't work or you have problems with it go for Lorazapam (anti-anxiety agent). My sleep doctor said this is a common postop problem and the cause is your sleep cycle has been disrupted and when you can't sleep you get anxious. Ambien and over the counter did not work for me at all. I week of the lorazapam and i was fine and no side effects
