Hi Everyone,

After a recent RTHR (2 weeks ago), I've been prescribed six months of a daily calcium supplement containing the following:

Elemental Calcium ..... 200mg
Calcitriol ..................0.25mcg
Zinc .........................7.5mg

Does anyone know if the addition of Calcitriol (which appears to be a vitamin D or D analog ? to improve calcium uptake) is advisable or not?

Many thanks,

Nick

I think you need Vit D to enable the uptake of calcium.

It has been my experience to also require just under 1/2 the milligrams of magnesium to allow the calcium to be absorbed and work correctly as well. I take 600 mg of calcium in the AM with 250 mg magnesium. I also take 1200 mg of calcium along with 500 mg magnesium, and 1000 mg Vitamin D in the PM daily.
Best,
Crystal

Your body can naturally produce vitamin D from UV rays. So, the Brits better take some extra! You could, conversely, take this to mean a tropical holiday is in order. . .

Anybody know what causes Vitamin D to be high when you are not even taking supplements? Any problems with it high?

Judy,

Unsure about why they would be high outside of taking lots of vitamins. All fat-soluble vitamins (A, E, D, K) can cause problems if too high. For Vit D these generally surround the high calcium associated with it. Ca+ is typically measured with routine blood work (say for pre-op labs). Your endocrinologist knows far more about this than I do.

Thanks Dave
I often stump my endocrinologist as well!!! He has said things like "let's get you to surgery soon to remove your adrenal gland" then runs one more test which totally conflicts his diagnosis and points to the problem being pituitary!!!

I would think its definitely sunshine,Judy!!!! And Milk!
