I am 6 weeks post op. I had a RTHR. Question...how long does it take for the pain in the butt to go away? When I sit my butt feels like it goes numb or asleep and is uncomfortable. It really isn't pain more discomfort. It is driving me nuts since I can only sit for about 20minutes without having to move to a new position.

Hi, Webbie....I'm better with knee questions so I'll have to defer to the Hippies on the forum. Hopefully you will hear from one or more of them soon on your question....or from Josephine.

Well it's been over 20 years and mine is still there!! But, it's ok cuz I love her.
On a more serious note, My butt starts bothering me on the ride home from work. But, it seems to be getting just a little better every day. The actual numbness is only around the scar appromimately 1 inch on either side of it. It will itch deep down at times (if that makes any sense) so, I assume that means that it is healing. It sure seems like everything is slow to heal from this surgery.

T-Mike - you naughty boy!

Webbie, 6 weeks - very early days! You shouldn't expect anything to rectify itself before 3 months at least, probably longer. It's deep surgery, deep healing taking place, etc., etc. Give it time ....

Like I always say Jo........whoever said it was a "pain in the butt HAD to have hip replacement surgery! :)"

It is such a wonderful surgery that I don't remember that pain in the butt feeling. Just how slow I thought recovery was going, only to be caught telling people what a quick recovery it was a little later!!!

Hi all, Judy I totally understand your comment. Even now I have some numbness around the bottom part of my incision. And when I press there is still some remnant of soreness--but slight atthis point.

I didn't have the pain in butt either butt it sounds like something that kind of pain could be part of healing....

Stay dry. (still raining here in NJ--enough already.)

T-Mike -very funny!!!!

Kathy -I can't relate to the butt pain -I don't have any. However, I do have a lot of inner thigh/groin pain, which feels like it will never go away! Hang in there.

At first I thought you were talking about getting rid of me..! ;-)

I was uncomfortable sitting in my truck and at my desk at work until around week 15+ or so. It was sorta like losing the cane, just one day I didn't notice the ache any more.

Still love my nice soft Lazy-Boy with the foot rest up!

That is too true and too funny, Judy! Funny how our memory alters our perception of things in retrospect, isn't it?

All your comments are encouraging. I was just concerned because it is the actual joint I feel when I sit. Of all the padding on this body I lack padding there. LOL. It is not incision pain..my incision is on the side...a cute little curve. I will be patient though. :))

T-Mike--very funny.
Webbie--I have had no butt pain either, but I also have been frustrated with what I consider a slowing recovery. At 5+ weeks, I am still on a cane and at times, it feels like I am going backwards. However, we must all remember that the recovery takes a while.
And Mudpro, I am looking forward to that day when I just don't need the cane anymore. It has already happened with tying my shoes. One day, I just realized I could do it again after about 5 years. I was like a child who had just learned how to do it.

So glad I am not the only one with occasional, late in the day butt soreness.

I am 5 months out (dec 3) from a TLHR, and fully back at it, walk 40 mintuesd up and down hils at least 3 days per week. But on a day when I am particlularly busy my incision is sore, If I sit in a comfy chair, it goes away soon, but in any case, it always goes away by morning.

Tom, You are doing great. At the 5 weeks mark I started using the cane outside for walking a short distance. I used the walker and cane on a 50/50 basis. I have a bad time with tightness in the knee and thigh. REALLY tight. So they kept me on the walker longer for balance.

Yesterday at my follow appointment the doc said to be patient. I was sitting on the joint and it is still tender.
