I am going in for my Bilateral Total Knee Replacement on October 16, 2009. I have done alot of research on the net and through peoples experiences. I found out that I am getting a Sigma fixed bearing knee. My surgeon says he prefers it -- I was hoping for a rotating platform knee. Any one have any information about the type of knee you have and what your experiences is. You can see my story at broken link removed: https://www.christinesnewknees.blogspot.com

Is there a medical reason for the fixed bearing knee? Is it the only knee your OS is qualified to insert?
My OS inserted the Johnson & Johnson Depuy Rotating Platform. He specializes in that one. I have been most happy with my results as I am an active person and this knee allows me to get back to my normal active activities. OS vary as to what implant they have trained for and have experience.
I have returned to skiing, taken up golf (played 63 holes over the long weekend, using a golf cart), garden, and work 50 hours/week providing child care to 4 children daily.

Christine are you talking about snow skiing or water skiing? "Wow" to either one! I am just curious. :thmb:

I am sooooo looking forward to new knees. I'll have these knees for one more day and then the big snip. I have managed to get all the stuff purchased and will have to arrange for a hospital bed to put in our main floor living room. I am sure I won't be able to climb those 30 stairs to my bedroom for some time. My mom is flying in from Alberta to help me out when I get out of the hospital so I'll be well cared for afterward. I am supposed to be released on the 25th of October.

Best of luck to you and we'll be waiting to hear from you after surgery!!!

Hi, Crystal, I think you are probably right - my surgeon is probably specializes in that particular one. He also has some patented modifications that make it the joint of choice. I'm just glad to get new knees and will work with what I get. Sometimes I think the less you know the better!! Thanks for your reply

Actually, it's a bit of a misnomer about the rotating platform as the 'ordinary' knees still rotate quite a lot. It's just a different kind of rotation in the Depuy, with only a very few degrees difference. So this is a perfect example of why people should be careful about what they read on manufacturer's websites. It can be very misleading to the inexperienced eye.

I have the knees that your surgeon is using. Mine are working for me very well. My surgeon prefers that knee and as Jo so often says, you want the knee that the surgeon is comfortable with installing.
