Everything went well I came home the next day I had my nest all set up ahead of time. The first night home was a little rough I was loaded with fluid from the hospital to keep me hydrated well it came out the first night home. :heehee: the nurse came in Fri. The incision looked good And the PT she went easy. Very happy it is over.

I'm glad all is well and the surgery is behind you. Now comes the recovery. I'll leave you a copy of our recovery articles, which are very helpful as you recover.

Knee Recovery: The Guidelines
1. Don’t worry: Your body will heal all by itself. Relax, let it, don't try and hurry it, don’t worry about any symptoms now, they are almost certainly temporary
2. Control discomfort:
rest
ice
take your pain meds by prescription schedule (not when pain starts!)

3. Do what you want to do BUT
a. If it hurts, don't do it and don't allow anyone - especially a physical therapist - to do it to you
b. If your leg swells more or gets stiffer in the 24 hours after doing it, don't do it again.

4. PT or exercise can be useful BUT take note of these

5. At week 4 and after you should follow this

6. Access these pages on the website

We try to keep the forum a positive and safe place for our members to talk about their questions or concerns and to report successes with their joint replacement surgery.
While members may create as many threads as they like in a majority of BoneSmart's forums, we ask that each member have only one recovery thread. This policy makes it easier to go back and review history before providing advice.

Welcome to the other side @linney619 ! All done and dusted - glad it went well. I look forward to following your recovery journey.

Welcome to recovery! I hope it's all going well.

PT just left everything is ahead of schedule my knee is bending well.
I know the first week is always the hardest time flies I'll be going to the gym before I know it.:spin:

Congratulations! Welcome to the other side! It sounds like you are well prepared and Performing the rest, ice, elevate mantra! Keep up the good work and let us know how you progress!

I'm jealous. One week out and stiff as granite and sore as hell. But good reports like yours keep us going.

Congratulations....I'm happy for your progress. I want to send a small bit of information your way though, just in case there are any setbacks!

My first week was great, as far as knee flexion and extension, though the pain was pretty high still; then...midway through the 2nd to third week I stopped progressing in my bending and the pain increased. I had been reading through many of the posts on this forum and decided to slow down on my recovery exercises, I had been doing all the elevating and icing and pain medications as prescribed, but the leg went into a holding pattern for about a week and 1/2. By slowing down and listening to the advice here....I started feeling better. Just in case you see a regression, it is just a matter of waiting to heal the knee.

Best of luck, I hope it all goes well for you!

This my second TKR my first one I didn't have as much bruising around the incision. My visiting nurse thinks it looks good they see a lot worse.
Has anyone had more bruising and how long did it take to fade.
My staples were taken out yesterday feels much better. And I had different Doctors for my second first one got a job working for replacement co.

Welcome!

My LTKR I had almost no bruising at all, even though the OS had to do a considerably amount of straightening along with the new parts. With my right, I had huge bruising all along the outside of the leg. There is a lot of variation within 'normal' for this process. I'm at 5 weeks at I think it's all faded and more importantly it doesn't feel like a bruise to the touch.

@linney619
You'll notice that I have merged your newest thread with your original recovery thread. Did you lose your other thread?
Please try not to start new recovery threads.

For several reasons, we prefer that you only have one recovery thread:
  • That way, we have all your information in one place. This makes it easier to go back and review your history before providing advice.
  • If you keep starting new threads, you miss the posts and advice others have left for you in the old threads, and some information may be unnecessarily repeated
  • Having only one thread will act as a diary of your progress that you can look back on.
So please post any updates, questions or concerns about your recovery here.
Don't worry that we won't see your question because, between us, the staff read all new posts every day.

If you need an urgent response to a question, just tag a member of staff.
How to tag another member; how to answer when someone tags you

If you prefer a different thread title, just post what you want and we'll get it changed for you.

Here are the instructions on finding your thread, How can I find my threads and posts? . Many members bookmark their thread, so they can find it when they log on.

Now, about the bruising: I looked at the photo you posted of your knee and the bruising didn't seem excessive to me. There is a wide variation concerning how much bruising people experience, but most of it is normal.

Have a look at the photos in this article, which also explains how the bruising happens:
Bruising after surgery

Well looking at the pictures of some of the bruising that can happen may doesn't look bad.

Oh goodness, my bruising was exacerbated by the Lovenox (blood thinner) shots I had to take for 10 days. It was solid purple from ankle to hip, especially on the back side where I had been laying to "ice & elevate." This mostly disappeared around 2.5 weeks, except for a couple of spots on my calf and one spot on my thigh, that may have been from the tourniquet.

Witch Hazel or Arnica cream did help with the tenderness.

I didn't realize I started two recovery threads.
I was concerned about bruising but I can see now it is a part of healing and I need to relax it will heal in due time.
I had the staples out yesterday and it feels better already. I'm still wearing the compression sock which gets uncomfortable at times. Bottom line all is going well!

Now I seem to be going through bone aching stage. Aching going down to my ankle I'm in my third week so next week I'll be checking that stage off.
It feels good that the time is flying and I'll be over it all. I have been walking with my cane and walking the stairs with my PT.
I'm trying not to take Tramadol it makes me feel drowsy I have 500 mg tylenol I try just that I don't need meds all the time.

Ah yes, the bone aching phase. My July leg had bone ache terribly and it lasted, well, sometimes I still feel it. My Newbie leg hasn't really had much at all. I hope yours passes quickly. Keep icing. It helps.

It will be 3 weeks tomorrow and my knee is still swollen. I'm walking with a cane during the day my PT feels I'm doing good.
I think cabin fever is getting me down I'm getting anxious I want it to be over soon I'm icing and elevating doing some knee bends and leg lifts but the kne is still swollen.
I don't remember when I had my other knee done in 2016 how long it stayed sore and swollen.

I think each day is such a new adventure with our pain and swelling, I'm always surprised how long things do take! And how one day is great and the next day is not so good!

Cabin fever is so real, it hit me around weeks 3-5...now I'm at 6 and sad that I am returning to work 4 hours a day tomorrow. Once I get back I'm sure I'll be fine! It's just part of this unique recovery!
