My doctor told me to take 2 aspirin a day for blood thinng. I stopped taking them at 10 days - but I have heard of others taking them much longer. I have my 4 week next week and will ask. Why do we need blood thinners so long?

Are there any supplements that help with healing? I am taking Vit C, E and multi. I also have to take extra iron because I am anemic post surgery.

10 days sure seems a short time. I was taking warfarin for 5 weeks. Blood clots are a serious problem and can occur down the line. This type of surgery involves a lot of manipualation of bones and the inside of bones have lots of blood and they can throw clots. The medical literature also indicates using warfarin for 4 weeks and the low molecular weigh heparin products for at least 2 weeks.

My pharmacist told me to take your iron with Vitamin C before breakfast or on an empty stomach.

Did the doctor tell you to stop at 10 days or did you decide? I was on asprin also, very high dose. I think it was more like 4-6 weeks. As far as other stuff, I was on a multi, and vit C. In the hospital I think I was also on something because I was anemic but that was better by home.

Thrombosis is a risk for anything up to 6-8 weeks though the peak risk is between 0-21 days. I'm not really hot on pharmaceuticals but I thought if one needed anti-coagulants they should be taken for at least 3 months. Some people - obese, smokers, drinkers - may need them for much longer.

I had BTKR on 6/18. I was on coumadin in the hospital and during rehab and was switched to full strength aspirin in the AM and PM and will continue to take it until July 30th. That is 6 weeks.....
Best,
Crystal

I am two weeks post-op and was given heparin injections twice daily in the hospital then put on 81 mg of aspirin when I was discharged. The aspirin supply I was given is for 3 months.

WOW - I think I just didn't get clear enough info. I will get back on the aspirin this weekend and ask again on Tues at my 4 week post op visit. I am also on iron for anemia which happened through this surgery.

Take vit c on empty stomach - I will try that to.

Again - can't tell you how much it means to be able to share and be heard. Your experiences are so valuable to me.

I was originally prescribed Arixtra (shots) to thin blood for 10-12 days post-op but developed a pulmonary embolism (blood clot in the lung) on day 2 post-op and now will be on Comoudin (Warfarin) for 6 months of monitoring. Thrombosis is can be serious stuff, and this clot could have killed me if they had not monitored me so closely. I am thankful for the Comoudin, even if it does restrict my diet for the next 6 months. At least there are no side effects.

In the hospital I was on 2 baby aspirin a day and coumadin daily. When I was duscharged I was given a script for 3mg warafarin ( for coumadin) 1 daily for 30 days. I also am still having blood drawn 2 times a week for monitoring. He didn't do the apirin upon release. WHen I have had scopes I have done the apirin for 30 days. I also had foot pumps in the hospital and have TED hose until the staples come out next week.

I amtaking my daily vitamin also.
