I have a blood clot behind my left knee - 2 weeks post -op with bilateral unicompartmental knee replacements- I am discouraged-thought I was coming along fine-
no one agrees on how much activity- what to do for PT , etc, and am on many blood thinners - anyone else have this problem?
it is pretty scary, they say only one in 100 have this

One of my friends had TKR right after me and she had one in her calf. She was in a local nursing facilty for quite some time, but she had lots of complications due to Fibromyalgia and some other issues. they kept her on thinners for a while and she had bedrest. She's home and doing great now. I'll be praying your clot dissolves and your pain and fear are totally eliminated. I was super worried this would happen to me, so I can't even imagine how scary it is for you. I pray God guides your doctors to a good diagnosis and treatment and that you are back on track very soon. God bless you!!

Dear dear Kiz,
I never had the problem you are experiencing but I can promise you that you've come to the right place. I am so sorry you have to go through this but you have our thoughts and our prayers and I hope that helps some. Just hang in there and do whatever it takes to get better.
God Bless & Keep You!!!
Cathy

Kiz, welcome. and sorry to hear of your blood clot. Make sure you do just what the medical guys say. The blood thinners should sort you out. I'm sure Jo can give you some advice when she comes along later. Take care, Sue

kiz, I was scared to death of a blood clot. I had to give myself those blood thinner shots for two weeks..
It is very good that they discovered it. I would suspect they've given you enough meds for it to be disolving now.
Prayers for you.

You gave yourself shots??? I would have fainted dead away first. You are the man, a real stud. Whoa, I wouldn't have had the surgery if I thought I'd have to give myself shots - one let alone for 2 weeks!! Gadzooks!

I thought every tkr patient had to..It is a shot in the stomach..Good target zone.
The really didn't hurt.
My wife is extremely paranoid of needles. The first night I gave myself the shot, she was kind of watching out of the corner of her eye. When I stuck it in, I yelled. I thought she was going to pass out.

I'll send prayers for you and best wishes for a safe recovery. Those PRK knees will get you back on track in a hurry once this glitch is over. Follow your doc's instructions and let your body and meds take care of it.....
If you don't mind my asking--- how did they discover it?

PS. My new knee is also uni- and there are some definite advantages over the TKRs that most here have had. You're gonna do just great!

I didn't have to do the shots but my good friend did in the stomach just like you Doug. I have to give myself an iron shot once a month in my thigh because of the gastric bypass surgery I malabsorb iron and if you don't get enough you could be in big trouble.
I can tell you that at first when there was more fat there it didn't hurt but as I lost weight now it's a little painful but the needle is small.

Cathy

I only had the stomach shots in hospital, they put me on pills for it at home. It never hurt though to get the shots, the needle is tiny.

Sad to say but I have on occasion, when provoked, been called a "rabid dog". Maybe I do need the treatment.

But that was only with individuals who thought, mistakenly, that when I said,"you're under arrest", they had other options.

Thank you for your responses- I feel like I have friendly understanding from you all-
it is confusing - they used to say total bedrest for clots, now they tell me I can exercise- I am not exactly comfortable with this- I too give shots to myself twice daily, but this does not bother me, I just think of it as dissolving the "clot-bomb ", and picture in my head that it is dissolving as I inject .
I also have restless legs syndrome, which will not allow me to rest for any period of time. Whaaa. . . sounds like whining to me- I guess this ole gal is sort of feeling sorry for herself?
Some days sure seem long!

Kiz,
Several of us have the Restless legs problem too. Not taking any meds for it now. It seems to have developed post TKR so I'm hoping as I get off of the drugs and become more active, the RLS will go away..
I don't want to take any more pills

I only got shots in the the hospital the first few days til coumadin kicked in.
It was really depressing. The nurse says I have to give this shot in a fat layer
how about if we do it in your stomach.

Nice way of saying a little paunchy around the middle aren't we.

I had blood clots in both legs---had lovinox injections for about a month, then aspiren treatment for another month. Had an ultrasound done about amonth and a hlf ago, all gone...

kiz.....you are pretty fresh from surgery. If you read the posts in this forum, you'll see everyone goes through periods of whining and feeling bad. All of us have big shoulders to cry on - and we've all BEEN THERE!!! But you will improve quickly....you'll see light at the end of the tunnel (that ISN'T a train), and I hope that you'll keep us up to date on your progress. ....Jamie

kiz---I started my PT and was feeling great when they shut me down when they found that I had three blod clots---then, a couple of days later, they started me up again. they know what is best, and the meds I was on cleared everything up. Keep looking' ahead---don't look back! Like I posted before, I was on Lovinox and aspiri , but I was also focused on getting my mobility back---because of the clots, I spent nine days in the hospital---boy, was I glad to get home. It is a long road; it is a tough road; but believe, me, you can do it, and you will look back and be so proud and glad that you did.

Hang in there,

Tim C.

I only had pills - warafin. Gosh, I am glad!
