My THR was June 16. Yesterday morning I suspected I had a bladder infection. I went to the doctor today and she said I do have one. I'm on Levequa (sp) for seven days instead of five. I'm bummed for two reasons: at our last meeting, my doctor specifically said if I have a bladder infection, get on antibiotic right away. I just wonder how long I've had it. And two: my aunt was supposed to have her hip replaced again (second one in four years-long story) on June 24 and they found infection all around the previous hip replacement. They took out the replacement parts and she won't have surgery until at least Sept. 24. As an older woman, she went to the doctor more than I do (I'm 50) and she had no symptoms. I'm really scared about getting an infection in my replaced hip. How will they know if I have infection there?

Effectively, there are no early symptoms. Just increased aching, sometimes going on to pain. Rarely anything like draining sinuses though those do occur in the late stages. Perhaps some unexplained periods of pyrexia (fever).

Getting transferred infection from urinary tract infections is relatively rare, much more so than after dental abscesses or work as that bungs a whole load of bacteria into the blood system. A UTI just drips it in and so the natural immune system has a better chance of dealing with it.

I should check with the pharmacist is that a broad spectrum antibiotic or a UTI specific one? If the latter then it's not enough. You need a broad spectrum antibiotic and for at least 14 days, not 5 or 7.

Thanks Josephine. You made me feel much better. I will contact the pharmacist tomorrow, but I will have to wait until Monday if a prescription change is needed.
