Bipartite patella

I thought you were giving us a new recipe!

Shine, is this a problem you have? Have you had problems as a result of an injury? Has someone recommended surgery to you?

Jo may know of cases like this, but I don't recall anyone on the forum having this problem (the patella forms incorrectly in about 1% of the population as two bones instead of just one).

I guess I am part of the one percent. This hasn't been the issue with my knee but I do have bipartite patella. Just trying to get as much info as I can.

Shine! Hope you feel better and get your answers!

I'm glad to hear it's not bothering you. Our forum nurse, Josephine, may be able to provide some information. She has decades of experience in orthopedics.

Have you tried Googling to get information? Was this just recently diagnosed? I did some quick checking and one site said the majority of cases are diagnosed by accident during a routine xray. Hopefully you'll never have any problems with it.

Oh, and welcome to the forum!

Definition: A bipartite patella occurs when the patella, or kneecap, occurs as two separate bones. Instead of fusing together in early childhood, the patella remains separated. A bipartite patella is usually not a problem; it occurs in at least 1 percent of the population, and perhaps more.

Oooh! Never heard of that before! But had a read around and apparently it can be horizontal or vertical or just a small portion at the side somewhere. Evidence is it rarely causes problems.

Okay, now we've done the homework, what's the story?
