I made it all the way around--both ways--on my bike here at home!! It has to be set for more bend because otherwise I would need to pole vault my way onto it. I biked for eight and half minutes and then I was done for the moment. My OS would like me to bike 5-6 times a day. I am more encouraged to do that now that the pedals on the bike go 'round and 'round! :-)

PArty TIME!!!! I finally got around this week (Monday) a few times. Its really a great sense of accomplishment! COngrats!!!! My school psych just giggled - but she understood that while this sounded quite silly it was a big deal for me! Pedal away!!!!

Great job Linda. Hope you continue to do well. "The wheels on the bus go round and round." I celebrated when they put me on the bike and I could do the 360. Regards, Tom

I've been reading this forum for several weeks, and have finally decided I need to start posting.

My husband had a TKR on May 16th. This was surgery #10 on this knee. He had a work related accident in Dec 1992 and suffered through 9 surgeries over the next 2.5 years. He is currently age 51. He had a manipulation in early July as he apparently grows scar tissue like crazy. A couple of weeks ago, they added the JAS to his current therapy routine (which still includes pt three times a week).

To date, he hasn't been able to pedal a complete rotation on the bike. His flexion is 98 with extreme push from his therapist. He is still 5 degrees short from full extension. The therapists hinted on Friday that he will likely be released from therapy at his next OS appt on Sept 5th (16 weeks post surgery).

He isn't back to work yet, but I fear that the OS will release him to work on the 5th. I pray that they will at least give him appropriate restrictions. His job requires him to be on his feet all day, plus he lifts boxes and machines weighing from 20 lbs up to 60 lbs. Just doing work around the house creates swelling and pain. He tried to get off the pain meds, but had to succumb again in the hopes of seeing some progression at therapy.

From reading all of your posts, I don't know what - if anything - you can add. But feel free to give us input. We'll take any and all suggestions on what we should do to see some forward progress. His employer (not the same one from the original injury) is totally UNsympathetic, as is his co-worker. They both think he's making it sound worse than it is. It's frustrating and depressing.

Short answer is he CAN'T go back to work. No way is he fit enough and what those others think is beside the point. They are in ignorance of the facts. Any risk assessment carried on a job such as you describe and with the disabilities you describe, would not permit a person back into the work place.

I don't know how the law works in regard to Health and Safety in the Workplace, but if he requested a risk assessment by an Occupational Health nurse or doctor or a qualified and independent (therefore impartial) risk assessor, then a) the return to work would likely be prohibited and b) the firm would be liable for any issues arising if the employee was forced to return to work.

Here in the UK we have an government department for Health and Safety at Work and its policies are enforced by law. You surely have something similar in the US?

Yes - or that!! Forgot that bit!

Awesome Linda-it feels wonderful that first time the pedal goes all the way around! A milestone :)

Thanks Josephine and Linda for responding. I think it's time we get a worker's comp attorney on board to ensure that hubby's rights are protected. We've been trying to get some answers from our contact at worker's comp, but she never bothers to return phone calls. We asked for a new rep, but that request was ignored too. They do everything in their power to make life difficult.

Hubby would love nothing better than to be back at work, but we have to be realistic as to what he can do. I'd like to have him around for many more years and don't want him jeopardizing his health.
