Just wanted everyone to know I`m well and back to work Half days 3 days out the week for the summer, then when the fall season starts hopefully I`ll be working 10 hours 4 days out of the week. :D
I`m doing 10mins on my Schwinn Airdyne then lower the seat and do 3-5 more mins. I`ve also added some leg lifts and started using my "abs" workout on the floor -it feels so good to work out again!
I`m looking for some feedback on riding my outside bike, its just not happening- so close but I`m scared of falling, A friend who just had a partial knee-said are bike riding days are over but I`m not ready to give up!

Help :fdbk:

Hi You I missed ya!!!!Me to.lol. I want to try just scared so I will wait to see what people say. I am glad you are taking you time. I think thats the best. You see to be doing great...Dont wait so long to post...lol...Dont give up you'll take off one day and they wont be able to stop ya......Nice hearing from you again....

Preteach,
No! Your bike riding days are not over. 4 months after my BTKR, I was riding my bike all over the place. I was even able to ride up hills standing, and I am 64 young. I do not know how long ago your surgery was but you can ride again.

Your bike riding days are NOT over!!! This is excellent exercise and you should be able to get back to it. If you are feeling unsteady at this point, it's your body telling you it's not quite strong enough yet. So keep working on your stationary bike, doing exercises to strengthen your quads and core muscles, and balance exercises. You'll be on that bike before you know it!!

Hi Preteach

I specifically asked my OS at my six week check up about bike riding. He said do as much as I want to on the exercise bike, but he suggested waiting six months before going outside on a 'real' bike. I think the reason is to make sure everything is healed in case you have to jump off in a hurry and jar the new knee.

I've an elderly friend here, in her eighties, with two bionic knees, and she regularly rides her bike for several miles at a time. I'm hoping to do the same before too long! You'll be fine as long as you feel that it is right! Good luck!

I rode my bike outside at just 3 mos after my TKR. I went on a very quiet road near our lake where there are almost no cars so I could wobble around a little. You just have to have a leap of faith and off you go. I actually can ride very relaxed up to 3 miles now. I have a very simple 3 speed bike with regular pedals. I gave my clip in pedals to my daughter. I want to be able to get my foot down fast if need be.

Wow sounds like so much fun. My doc said I had to wait for 6 months on outside bike. Which is no problem as I will don't want to ride in the 100 plus degree weather we are having here. I will cont. my exercise bike.

I used to race bikes. There's no way my bike riding days are over. My bike is sitting on a stationary trainer right now. In fact, I was finally able to pedal on it in my cycling shoes (which clip in and don't allow your foot to move once it's on the pedal) today. This was a first. I'm more excited than I can express in words. It's still too soon to ride outside, but I will certainly be doing so in a few more months (if not sooner).

Hey what a good idea using your bike shoes on the trainer.I have my bike set up outside on the porch, which at least gives the illusion of riding!!! I tried my bike shoes this am and it is so much easier to ride it with them on. Also, I had my shoes checked at the bike store, so I know that my knees are straight with them on. Ihave had a few falls with my shoes on, however--sometimes I forget to disengage before I stop!!! I rode my bike outside for a couple of miles two days ago----it was fun, but Iused regular shoes and it was tricky with my pedals. I would need some regular pedals if I were going to ride with shoes.

I think it is all about balance at his point---I went with some friends, my husband drove me to the end of their ride, so I only rode a couple of miles with them---but, it was so much fun just sailing along and talking and laughing. But, we were on a dirt road (I have a mountain bike) that was relatively flat--only two hills. I did notice that my stamina is bad for the two hills, but I did make it up them!!

skigirl, I easily got my shoes clipped in. Once I was done, of course, I had a hard time clipping out. That's why I will only use them on the trainer. I can certainly tell things have changed on that side of my body. I may need to tweak the cleats on my shoe to change the angle of my knee. In fact, I'm sure I will. This is no longer an osteoarthritic knee. My leg is probably straighter than it's been in years.

I have a fixed gear bike as well. I don't know when I'll be able to ride it again. I won't even think about that yet.

Good job, preteach. I think you will know when you're ready. If you're still hesitant, you're not quite ready. I think you should start building up your time on the exercise bike. Can you do 30 minutes without too much discomfort? I think once you're at the point where the discomfort is minor and you know you can easily deal with whatever obstacles might be in your path outside (rocks, cars, etc.), then you're ready.

I am 5 months post, and ride bike daily or try to. I can ride 5-8 miles, but I do get some swelling after the ride. I don't use clips no more, but I am riding a cross bike now with toe hook pedals. You can still pull some with your toes but are free of pedals ,if you need to be. These seem to work very well. At times I can still feel my knee catch ,and then pop and let go. Feels kinda good, lol.Happy riding to all!!:thmb:

Hello Preteach!

I am almost 8 months out and just got back from a Fat Tire Festival (mountain biking) in a close by Colorado town. I rode hard for 2 days. The last day I rode a 4 1/2 hour ride with a 2700 ft elevation gain. No problem with this knee!! I am so much faster and stronger than I have been in years. I rode outside at 3 months, but not on trails till 6 months. I started out gently and when my confidence got stronger I graduated to more difficult trails. I know am upset with my other knee and the ache in it. I know a TKR is in my future for that one. My OS said ride as much as you want, no limitations. He knew I was a competitive mountain bike racer. I don't care if I race again, I just want to continue to ride these moutains!! Riding with no pain...........priceless!! Good luck! Go slow and keep riding!

Mary
