My new knee was five weeks old yesterday, and at physio I was doing a flex exercise, pulled a tendon in the back of my knee. Excruciating pain, now I can't bend the knee at all. I was doing SO well, making great progress, don't know how long this will take to heal. Has anyone ever had this happen? It feels as if I disconnected something that runs up from my calf to my thigh through the back of the knee. Phooey!!:sigh:

Famous sporting injury - pulled/torn hamstring. Now you know why sportsmen roll around on the floor in agony clutching their knee and thigh! Bad luck, girl! However, it will heal but you're going to have to go easy on it while ir does. So don't get in a panic that you're losing your opportunity to get good flexion. You can still succeed at that for some months. Our mantra here is 'rest, ice, medicate and elevate'!

btw - welcome to BoneSmart!

Welcome, Phyll!!!! Bummer! I see lots of ice and elevation in your future! Take it easy!

Good greif that is awful. I know you will feel better soon. Then just come back really strong. You can do it. Just do what the Dr says....Lil more time to get pampered. Take care of yourself. Post even if your bored. Or with questions. We would love to just chat. Take it easy and take care of yourself..........You will be in my prayers..........

Hi, Phyll and welcome to BoneSmart! So glad you found us! Don't let this get you down. If you follow our nurse, Jo's, wonderful advice of rest, elevate, ice and take your pain meds, you'll be back on that road to recovery in no time. Post whenever you have a question or concern....or just to pop in and say hi or give us an update on how you're doing.

Thanks so much for the replies...I went to physio this morn and the diagnosis is as suspected, pulled hamstring. A week or two of ice and rest should do the trick, and then I'll be back on track. Yesterday was the five week mark, and I expected to be driving again in another, but that may have to wait a while longer. Oh well, I'm trying to be patient, smile through the boo hoos, and just look onward and upward! Whoo hoo...it's not forever, right???
Phyll

Good attitude....it's NOT forever....and soon you'll be back on track.

Welcome Phyll, sorry you have had a bit of a hiccough. Best wishes for the rest of your recovery.

Welcome to the forum Phyll. Sorry you've got an extra problem, but hopefully it won't set you back too much. Keep posting to let us know your progress. You're still very early in recovery - but it will be worth it in the end!

Phyll,
Take this next 2 weeks and concentrate on something else as a project. Read a book series, knit, crochet, embroidery, cross stitch, crewel work, or any type of hobby that will help you pass the time with this pulled hamstring. Sorry you have to deal with it, as it is not fun at all. A whole different other type of pain to deal with...... Keep your chin up and you will be back on track before you know it.
Best,

Oh Wow! Thanks to all of you for the encouraging replies. I'm still struggling with this issue of the hamstring...and my knee, which was moving really well, is now in limbo (and so am I!). I wish there were something besides rest and ice to heal the hamstring more quickly, but guess not. I cancelled going to physio today in order to stay off the leg as much as possible. Nothing else to do, I guess...got to look at the big picture and stop the whining! Thanks again for your support...Phyll

Well we all whine at one point or another .lol. Glad to hear you canceled PT. It is hard to rest, ice, relax but we my not be able to when things get back to normal. so take advantage of it now right!!!Hang in there keep us posted. Hope you feel better soon. It will get better though........

Feel free to whine here....it's definitely allowed as we all can relate to your feelings! But....on the positive side.....you are doing what needs to be done for your Dear Hammy. It definitely will appreciate the pampering.

No need to stop the whining. Trust me, we've all done our share - even me!

Thanks, Texas Kim! I'm so happy to have found this blog where I can talk to others who've had (or are having) the same experiences. I sort of feel like I've been set adrift without a roadmap...won't have a follow-up with the surgeon until July, just see the therapist one-on-one for about 30 secs. each time I go for physio, and last week when I pulled the hamstring, I wasn't given any instructions or info. Going online is the best I've gotten!
Keeping the chin up, though!
Phyll

Thanks, y'all, for permission to whine! I really need to, but know this is just a little hiccup on the road to recovery...all will be well in time!
Phyll

Well, stay with us anyway! We likes ya company!
[Bonesmart.org] Big setback

I can relate Phyl. I'm 8 weeks and was better till I overdid exercise and probably pulled something. Now I have to rest, ice, elevate.

My doc today showed me a horrible bruise on his inner leg/knee area where he tore a hamstring muscle by not stretching. Do you have bruising?

We commiserated about what a bummer it is to just do no exercise until healing occurs, depressing even.

Hollie

Oh my gosh, Hollie! Seems to me there ought to be warnings about overdoing the exercises, especially if the patient with the new knee is older. Easier to pull something if the muscles aren't as elastic as they once were, right? At least, in my case I think that was part of it. Nope, no bruising, thank goodness. Today I'm seeing a new therapist for a consult, just to get a fix on pulled hamstrings, what exercise is okay until healing happens, what alternatives there are to just rest/ice/elevation...you're so right, it's frustrating to the max, especially when things are going really well. I'll let you know what he says...
Phyll

Isn't that what physiotherapists are supposed to be for?
