THR Bickypeg's new hip

Perked up a bit since I got up. Memo to self: don't moan on Bonesmart first thing in the morning! I did feel "weller" this time last week and not just because we had a houseful. There is a difference between recovering from a THR and actually feeling unwell as I remember last July when I had the norovirus. Difficult eating healthy nourishing food when your tum can't tolerate it. But it will pass...:gaah:

Naughty visitors. Get someone else to remind them not to come if infectious or with a bug. Its probably the tablets upsetting your balance a bit. Might be time to increase your medications, at least at night. Sounds as if all the pre-op hype and prep and expectation balloon is just deflating. Doesn't help that the good weather has disappeared and we are in store for the usual rain. But in a bit things will turn again and you will perk up.
:good-bad: Up and down , round and round we go. Take care.

Just thinking @bickypeg there is an awful lot of repositioning, balancing and strengthening going on in our bodies. Not just skeletal but also the muscles that support everything. Its so with me with only one hip. It must be doubly so for you. Its possible that some of the aches and pains are also from muscles working on rebalancing themselves.
I don't know if you have had any physio massage of the muscles round the incision? I have had some and it helped the tissues to soften and stretch more. It could be worth trying in a couple of weeks.

Another wakeful night having sips of water and toilet trips every few hours. Tum has settled I think but absolutely no appetite. When I last got up pain mostly in lower back and more worryingly in first hip.Trying to put off taking first lot of paracetamol as I try to space the 4 doses throughout the day. But I don't think they are adequate as pain relief Very tempted to go back to at least 1 codeine a day But I'm so reluctant to mess with my digestive system at the moment. The dry mouth is still tiresome and I know codeine will make it worse. Plan to ring the dentist later and see if he can recommend anything other than the usual which might help.
Swelling from new hip has more or less gone but some still in ankle of old hip. Will definitely mention this to consultant in only 3 weeks- yikes! I suppose in some ways being in discomfort has shown me what problems were disguised by stronger painkillers.I was planning on breezing in saying how great I felt which I did for nearly 3 weeks but that was clearly just the codeine talking. I'm totally confused as to what to do for the best.I have been looking back at posts from old double hippies like @1stSurgery and @SurreyGirl but I have to pinch myself and admit my problems so far are nothing in comparison! It does put my piddling problems into perspective! How brave you were!

Thanks @Apricot.None of us know how I or a friend who was here last weekend got the bug as the only possible connection was via son's girlfriend's niece whom I havent seen! Too bizarre! I banned them all when they had colds. I'd love a massage from someone who knew what they were doing. Our physios are very hands off. It's just do this, do that. Bit disappointing.

Maybe go back to a codeine at night to help the pain I remember taking an icepack to bed with me too and changing it halfway through the night. I also became addicted to ginger biscuits which helped my tummy. Maybe you should ask your gp if there is something g else you can take for the pain.... it is hard to recover when you feel low. I hope it all gets better for you soon.

Thanks me dear. I did actually feel much better in myself when I got up despite being stiff and in pain so I thought to hell with it! And had a codeine along with first paracetamol dose. Worked almost immediately and it was 5 and a half hours later when I realised I hadn't had a second dose! Was able to pootle about and do little household jobs instead of wondering where to sit as all the chairs were uncomfortable. Hoping if I stick to 1 a day it will help me cope. Emailed the dentist and she recommended a saliva spray so I'll try that tonight.
It's not so much pain more discomfort in bed, just when I get up and get moving that it's bad. Might try lying flatter instead of being so propped up I'm virtually sitting up all night.
Had tomato soup for lunch and really enjoyed it so hope the tummy bug has finally gone. It certainly brought me down mentally as well as physically. Good idea on the ginger biscuits.

Happy to see you are feeling a bit better. I also find ginger biscuits really help and must remember to get a good stash in before surgery. I also have a ginger tea which is surprisingly nice. Hopefully that bit of codeine will continue to make a difference for you. I'll pop a pot of homemade soup in the post for you today :)

Hi @bickypeg
I believe both SurreyGirl and Carriemay60 may be onto something in suggesting Ginger.
I'd even consider buying some Ginger Root at the supermarket and grating it into hot tea, or hot water with Lemon and Honey...if that appeals to you. It may also help with your gastrointestinal issue.
Ginger is a well know herbal sialagogue....huh, you say? :heehee:
It means it helps produce saliva production, which also helps dry mouth. Another option that may help is to use a portable humidifier, or cool mist vaporizer in your bedroom at night as keeping the environment more humid may also ease some of the dry mouth that seems to be plaguing you. Also, you could ask your doc to adjust your meds, prescribing something that does not cause dry mouth as a side effect. I hope it eases soon.
Enjoy the rest of your day! :)

Good morning, @bickypeg, although I know there is a time difference which probably means it's not morning for you, but regardless, I hope you're feeling better today--stomach more settled and aches and pains not so troublesome. I think getting up in the morning and certainly getting to sleep are times I'd consider adding in some stronger medication if it helps you get up and moving in the morning, or promotes better sleep at night. And I hop the saliva spray might afford some relief for your dry mouth as well. So many little things to worry about, it sometimes feels crazy. But remember where you are now compared to six months ago! You are doing great--maybe a zig zag course forwards, but still forward locomotion! You're getting there--hurray for you!

@bickypeg
Deep tissue and scar massage won't be available on the NHS. You will have to have private massage or Physio. I don't know of anyone in Mytholmroyd but can recommend two in Hebden Bridge. It is really worth doing and affordable for a few appointments. Its not if you have it done forever...

Ok thanks that's brilliant @Apricot certainly something to consider. Too soon yet? I don't know enough about these things. I've noted their numbers.
I know friends who wasted money on someone in Cragg Vale who just did stuff with stones, music, visualisation nonsense. Very 'Hebden Bridge'. Took them a couple of sessions before they realised they felt no better. :no-fin:

Definitely getting some ginger in @Layla and @Carriemay60 ! It really does seem a bit of a wonder herb/spice.I used to have a great recipe for carrot and ginger soup in the olden days when I actually did some cooking !
Tum back to normal today and I actually felt hungry when I got up for the first time in a long time.
I think the spray helped quite a bit @Barbaraj thank you. Only used it twice in the night and one of those most of it hit my chin! But generally a better night though I MUST remember to get up when I wake. It's going back for half an hour to read etc that spine and hips really don't like. They want to get moving. But the house is so cold and draughty first thing, it's very tempting!
Another achievement yesterday when despite cold wet windy weather I got in the car with no trouble! So exciting! Just drove up to Cragg where we used to live @Apricot and where it's still winter! Though the daffodils are lovely. Told husband to imagine I was carrying a very full glass of beer and he avoided the potholes really well...
Had another codeine with the other pills and breakfast and it does kick start everything , even contemplating a short walk if we can drive somewhere flat though it is very uninviting out there despite the rainbow.
I know I'm doing better when I look at my early Bonesmart posts. Poor old me, I was very frightened so much of the time. What would I have done without you all? :loveshwr:

:loll:
Man, I wish I had thought of using that analogy when my poor husband drove me home from the doctors office and down the rough dirt farm road to my sister's house.
Instead, I remarked "hey, turn around...I think you missed that bump back there!":heehee:
It IS true that these early days, you swat one fire out and find another smouldering...traveling pains...new aggravations that mostly resolve with time.:good-bad:
Reminds me of the common cold cure
Do nothing...lasts two weeks.
Go to doctor, take meds...lasts two weeks.

All we can do is make ourselves more comfortable the best way we can, right?
All temporary.
Hope you have a good day, @bickypeg :tada:

Glad to hear about getting in and out of the car.... All progress in small steps (literally in my case!).. Our boiler should get fixed tomorrow so we will have heat back in the house. I went to bed early with a hot waterbotle and watched Ainsley Herriot's programme re cooking in the Caribbean to cheer myself up... Pool Pilates could wait as not over my cold yet.

Hip still quite stiff - annoyingly so but still small progress being made so I am hopeful.. Keep up that ginger Bickypeg! I am going to look at turmeric and ginger with hot water, lemon and honey for a natural antidote to swelling. Will let you know how that goes :)

I used to take turmeric before the op (gymming son swears by it) but I'm sure I read something that said it wasn't good if....but can't remember what! But your combination sounds lovely and warming.

Ginger in your bisquits, ginger in your tea, ginger in your soup.
We'll just call you, Ginger
Hope your Tuesday is going well!
Hugs :friends:

Both the people I suggested are serious, trained, hands on professionals. Absolutely no stones or rainbows etc. They are both pretty busy.

Jenny never advertises now, although she may have a Facebook page. She does a lot of highly specialist work with cancer patients and lymphodema and fascia massage after surgery. I know her through working with a charity and friends have been to her regularly.

Ali is the one that has worked me over! She has just picked up a lot of clients who used to go to a HB Chiropractic - Debbie Dinc - who recently died suddenly. So you might have a wait in either case.

Your old hip incision would certainly be suitable for tissue massage and the new one probably is OK now or would be by the time you got to see them.

Ali transformed mine or as she put it, "helped it along," quicker than it would have done within two appointments. I've had a few more for work on the glutes and my knees with a little attention to the scar.

Do try you won't regret it. You'll get a better sense of range of movement from a physio too.

Oh indeed I didn't doubt it. Much better to have a personal recommendation. Was just musing on how many charlatans there are setting up in our area, particularly recently. Really can't call them anything else.

There do seem to be lots of alternative practitioners that come and go. However there are also some excellent professionals. There’s a good Feldenkreis practitioner in Mytholmroyd.
