I had both knees done a week ago today and have bruising all over both legs and feet. I would like to know what painkillers people have found most effective please, as I am taking zapain, but think there could be something stronger. I am able to walk well with crutches but realise I need to elevate too. I am doing all my physio exercises and have had a visit from the DN. However, I had to get up and shut my 5 labradors into the house, then go and open the gate, before she would come in. V painful!

I can not advise as I am not due BTKR for another 6 weeks, but Cindy888fan has just had the same op a few weeks ago, you may find some of her posts helpful. Hope you start feeling better soon.

I have had Percoset filled for going home for my surgery next week. I hope you feel better soon.

Me to Oxycontin,, 1- 12 hrs with hydro condone every 4 hrs........I sure how you feel better soon.........I only have 1 lab ....oh my goodness 5 ...lol...I hope you feel better soon...I dont know UK med I know some have different names.....But if your still in pain you need something else....:)

I have hydrocondone. I can take one every 4 hours however, my pain is gone except during PT so I take one 30 minutes before PT. I also came home with a pain patch that was good for 72 hours. I'm not a good one really to ask because I'm one of the very very lucky ones where the pain is concern. When I left the hospital I was only taking 2 hydrocondone a day and I've been practically pain free. If you are still in a lot of pain talk to your Dr. and get something else. There are so many different pain killers out there. They will find one that works for you. Best of Luck!!!!

Hopefully this doesn't post 2x.

I forgot to welcome you....so sorry!

Welcome to BoneSmart! This is a great place! Everybody on here is so supportive. Feel free to post anytime!

With your bruising, that can happen. I guess they do all sorts of things to your legs while you're out. Make sure you are flexing your ankles back and forth whenever possible. This helps prevent blood clots which can occur after surgery! And keep your knees iced down whether it be with a cryo-cuff, ice or bags of peas. Get the swelling down...less swelling = less pain and more bending.

Best of Luck!

Welcome to BoneSmart, Geraldine. So glad you joined us.

As Cindy said, bruising is fairly common after knee replacements. Your visiting nurse should be checking on it for you, but chances are it is just a result of all that went on during surgery.

You are going to have some pain for a while. This is MAJOR surgery and it will hurt. So be careful and try not to overdo things. If you feel your pain meds are not strong enough, contact your doctor and tell him you need something different. But be sure you are taking whatever you have on a schedule throughout the day and night. If you let the pain get out of control, it's really difficult to play catch up. So take them even if you aren't hurting for a while.

Otherwise known as co-codamol and not nearly good enough for one knee replacement, let alone two! Ask your GP if you can have Tramadol.

I took 100mgs plus 2 paracetamol for the duration of my recovery. In later times I reduced it to 50mgs+2 paracetamol then down to just the paracetamol. It's great stuff and you don't risk any dependency problems like you can with opiates like morphine and oxycodone. But the co-codamol is nowhere near enough.

Thank you all for your posts, they really helped me get a perspective. And the advice was good. Daughter has been down to GP to request other pain relief.

Have had 2nd visit from DN today, she showed us her scar from being bitten by a jack russell, whilst visiting a patient - no wonder she is scared of dogs!

Hope everybody is recovering well.:D
