Around a year ago I was diagnosed with Bi-Lateral AVN. I am 46 years old and at the time was not even having any hip pain. I was having some stomach issues and they found it by accident.
The whole thing has been overwhelming, I could probably go on for awhile with what I have been going through but I will try to just hit on the main points. I went to my first doctor who right away wanted to treat me with the core decompression surgery. By my regular doctors propting I ended up going to a major unniversity not far from where I live to seek an additional opinion. This doctor told me that since I was not having any pain at that point the core decompression was pre-mature. He also had very little faith in that procedure changing the outcome of my desease. He started treating me with Fosamax and thought that we should just monitor the situation.
Needless to say taking a pill compared to surgery I choose to follow the second doctors advice. That was 11 months ago, I have since then experienced varying degrees of discomfort. Recently I have been having alot of pain in my thighs and legs. The worst that I have experienced so far. Has anyone else with this problem had similar pain? I feel that eventually I am going to be facing hip replacement. I am scared but if the pain continues I feel that there will be no choice. I have been reading things on this forum but this is the first that I have wrote. I would appreciate any feedback from people that have been there, done that. Thank-you!

Hi Randy.I suffered with the pain for 5 years till I finally just plain could not function as a normal human anymore. The pain in my hip was brutal. It also really started to effect my knee and back.By the end of the day I was totally worn out from the pain.Tommorrow will be 5 weeks since the surgery.THE PAIN IS GONE! It takes a little recoop time but you will be glad you did it.I am.Nobody likes the fact of facing major surgery but you will be fine.Find yourself a doctor you trust.Talk to him. Mine told me " You will feel alot better after you have this done" He was 100% right.Unfortunatly the other options only really prolong the inevitable. You are young.I am 42.You will heal quickly and be up and around before long.Good luck and don't be afraid to ask questions.Time for PT. T alk to you soon. MIKE

Thank-you for the response! Its nice to hear from someone who has had to go through the same type of thing as I am. Five years is a long time to go dealing with the pain! I am sure that everyone's situation is different. It is good to hear that you are doing better and that you are glad you had the surgery. How is your recovery going? Thanks again!

Just got home from 5 week visit with the surgeon. He has lifted all restrictions. He said he was very satisfied with how things are.The hip will continue to heal for a few more months but ther is no reason to worry about it.Everything looks good.He also asked me when I was ready to go back to work.BooWoo.I am suppose to keep up with the therapy and he gave me two more weeks before releasing me to go back to work.He had my x-ray on his computer screen. That was really something to see. Also got a joint replacement I.D.card.All in all looking back it has been a very positive experiance as far as being given the option to get rid of the pain.I don't know what I would have done if there was nothing they could or would do.

Good deal! A person never knows what life has in store for them. Your right at least it was something that the medical world was able to help you with, some people are not so fortunate. I wish you the best of luck in the future!
Take care!
