Im 47 and had a hip replaced about a month ago. A year before the surgery I joined a gym to start strengthening before surgery, and this turned out to be a great idea. My upper arm strength really has helped me out in recovery, and extra leg strength didn't hurt either.
Its my guess that running, a few marathons, and probably an injury 10 years ago led to the need for a new hip. Knee problems 9 years stopped the running, and then that led to some weight problems.
To make a long story short, I HAVE to keep at cardio to keep my weight in check. Before surgery, the elliptical trainer was the only thing I could do without pain. My new goals are to get the exercise I need and minimize hip wear. Which is best, worse? I've been sticking to elliptical and recumbent bike. Are these best? I like the stair climber and treadmill, but I fear wear might be worse. Any studies on this?
Thanks. Love this site.
