I'm almost 5 weeks post-op. My good leg fell through a deck causing my new knee to bend the most it's been bent as I landed on my butt. It hurt immediately and swelled. Can you bend a new knee too much? I twisted my ankle on my new knee side too. I'm a mess right now.

Welcome to BoneSmart, glad you joined us! :welome:
Sounds like you gave yourself a MWA, mobilization without anesthesia. OUCH!
Knees normally swell after a MUA, mobilization with anesthesia, my guess is you are having normal swelling with what happened.

Suggest you spend the weekend resting, icing, elevating, and taking your prescribed medication on schedule as prescribed.
Call your OS on Monday and let them know what happened to you knee, they may want you to come in and take a look at your knee and your twisted ankle.

Please post your surgery date, a moderator will add it to your signature for you. Having the exact date will help us properly advise you. Thanks!

Here is your copy of the Knee Recovery Guidelines, the articles are short and will not take long to read.

Knee Recovery: The Guidelines
1. Don’t worry: Your body will heal all by itself. Relax, let it, don't try and hurry it, don’t worry about any symptoms now, they are almost certainly temporary
2. Control discomfort:
rest
ice
take your pain meds by prescription schedule (not when pain starts!)

3. Do what you want to do BUT
a. If it hurts, don't do it and don't allow anyone - especially a physical therapist - to do it to you
b. If your leg swells more or gets stiffer in the 24 hours after doing it, don't do it again.

4. PT or exercise can be useful BUT take note of these

5. At week 4 and after you should follow this

6. Access these pages on the website

Surgery for TKR on right knee June 8, 2020.

Welcome to Bonesmart!

I’m so sorry you fell, it’s our worst fear! Hopefully it’s “just” soft tissues that are upset, usually the implant does ok.

Can you bend a new knee too much?
Yes; but you will almost certainly have hurt only your soft tissue, which will heal, not the prosthetic itself. They are very strong!

It will probably take your soft tissues at least a week to get over your extreme bend. Spend that time icing and elevating as much as you can so you can get the pain and swelling down. I'm pretty sure your implant is OK, but those poor soft tissues are going to raise Cain for a while. At least you know your knee will bend a lot! Your bend won't be as good until the pain and swelling go down, so don't worry about that. A sore swollen knee can't bend as well with all that fluid in it.

Ouch! Most of us have done something similar if not so dramatic. Nothing to add to what Pumpkln said except :console2:

Thank you. I needed reassurance. Today I'm sore from my foot to my quad. I have bruises on my left thigh where I went through the deck. That will help show my PT guy just how much everything bent!

I would skip PT if I were you until most of that soreness goes away. You've had quite a fall there with an unexpected, too quick, bend. You need to heal from this before adding exercises to your poor knee.

I agree that you should consider taking some time off PT and give your re-wounded leg a rest. (First wound was the surgery)
