So, for those of you who don't remember me, I am about 8 months out from a RTHR. I have had a lot of trouble, been in a lot of pain and have not been able to find anything out. I finally went and saw an OS that specializes in revisions to find out what was going on. He had me have some blood work done that showed inflammation, then he had me have a bone scan and they drew fluid out of the joint capsule to test for infection. Well this week I got the results and here they are along with the plan... So, we got a call back finally from the doctor's office this week. It looks like it's infected. Finally have an answer, but the least desirable answer I could have gotten. The up side is that now there is a plan... and here it is.
I go back in on December 10th for a pre-op appointment. That is the absolute fastest I could get in because the doctor is on vacation until then, the nurse told my wife that I was on the VIP list and am being put in front of everyone else. I am going to beg for surgery to be done before the end of the year (at least the first surgery, more on that later), because I am at out of pocket maximums with my insurance this year because of everything else that we have done. The scheduler that my wife talked to said that they would do everything they could do to make that happen.
So, this is how it goes... they go in and take everything out, clean it all out (remove all the hardware and bone cement), put in a temporary prosthetic (which he explained is just a less expensive set of hardware) and put it in place with antibiotic bone cement. At the same time they will put in a PICC line in place so that I can give myself IV antibiotics. Then, they leave that in for 6-8 weeks and I give myself antibiotics for that period of time. Toward the end of that time they test everything to see if the infection has cleared up. When it has they will schedule me back in and take the temporary stuff out and replace it with permanent hardware. Of course because I had that DVT with the last surgery I will have to be on Coumadin during the whole process so that I don't have another clot.
This is not the greatest news I could have gotten, but at least it explains the pain I have had. It also explains why I have been sick every couple weeks since I have had the first surgery, which is very unlike me. I have always been a guy who has like one bout of sickness a year. (Not one every week or two)
Needless to say I am a bit nervous about the whole experience. I did not have a stellar experience from the first one so... I am a bit scared of having two more. I will keep you all informed at what's going on. You guys were a big help for the first one so I am looking forward to having you around for the next two. :cnsl:
