This site has a good picture of the torture devices they use in the ASTYM treatment. They slide these devices over your incision once it is completely closed. I do believe that it has helped with my scar tissue, but to me at least, it is very painful. Has anyone else here had this treatment? :shk:

Nope! Not me! But the results must be very good, Beth!!!((:0)

Nope. I continue to use a skin cream (dermatone) much like Vaseline or Bacitracin on my scars. It is great for your skin in cold weather and has sunscreen as well. It helps me with movement in the AM right after my shower. Love it!

It can be very painful.......I was wondering how many other people have had this done. I read on the internet that not too many places use it and the training is rather extensive. :sct:

Beth, I wonder if this would help with sciatica. I looked on the web site and found one provider here in Las Vegas. I will look them up after my next TKR. I know I got rid of plantar facitis by running my foot on a tennis ball or soup can as hard as I could so I can see how this could help.

I don't know......I was surprised to see on the website all the different things they use this for. I guess I thought it was just for knee surgery!!

I can see where it might have helped me after the plantar faciaitis to break up scar tissue......

Like I said, it's fairly painful (depends on the PT's 'technique' but my doctor was really happy with the results on my incision. Practically no scar tissue. Just a little at the top and at the bottom of the scar.

I would be interested to know what they say, Rhonda.

Must say I like the music on the site. But the devise looks like other things I have seen in PT that have been used on folks with sensitive scars.

Never had it used on me though.

Hope it works for you.

That is basically what it is for--to scrape over the incisions to break up scar tissue. I never knew there were any other uses until I looked at that web site. They have used that on me every time I go to PT. Just before I leave is when they do it.

Beth, does this make the scar look better, or just feel better?

Actually, my scar is a deeper red color than it used to be and a bit of a rope look, but very very minor. I guess it's called Keloid? But like I said, very minor. As a matter of fact, lots of times at PT, another patient will say, "you have such a nice scar!!" :sct:

What it did was get rid of the majority of the scar tissue. When I first discovered the scar tissue, it was close to 1/2 an inch outward of each side of the incision. I could feel it under my skin.

Now I only have the incision itself. There is basically no scar tissue that extends beyond my incision. There is a little area at the bottom of the incision that still has some "hard" scar tissue. As much as I have hated it, it has helped on that issue.:pzld:

At 2½ months there's every possibility it would have got there on it's own anyway

Don't tell me that Jo!! Now I feel like I've been tortured for nothing!!!
Well, getting rid of the scar tissue is about the only thing I feel PT has really done for me. I can get to a very painful 110 on my flexion, and I'm not too worried about that. (But should I be??)

If you look up some more sites about the ASTYM technique, there are people who believe in it, and people who think it is a waste of time and money. I'm surprised more people haven't had this done to them. I'm just glad I'm not getting that anymore!! I have about an inch of thicker scar tissue at the bottom of my scar. Will gentle massage get rid of that or do I need to do something just a bit more aggressive?
