I figured I would start a new thread since we are on page 10+ on several other threads. We do have a tendency to completely and totally get off topic.
Skeet mentioned hunting for 4-6 hours this morning and it got me to thinking of where I'm at with this big fat monkey of a knee.
I'm at 8 weeks post op today.
Are you guys practicing walking?
This morning I did the cycling, seated leg press, leg extensions, leg curls.
Then I tried the treadmill for 30 mins. I put it on an incline which lessens the impact of the foot hitting the belt. I also only went at 2.5mph. It was a good workout.
When I got through I went for my mall walk.
A long explanation to get to the point. Are you guys limping??
I start out O.K. but towards the end, I feel like I'm walking like the hunchback of Notre Dame...
I think I need to really try to increase the walk.
Skeet, I've learned from a lifetime of athletics that if you want to get strong you have to use resistance training. If you need to run, you have to train to run. So it makes sense that if you want to walk and hunt, you need to push the walking. We need the bike to work the ROM and strengthen the leg some but we probably need to incorporate more walking. Big revelation right??
Now I feel better.---Gotta go cook.

I will confess that I wrote the above after taking 1 1/2 oxycodone pills so if it doesn't make any sense---sorry. There is another weather front heading this way and my knee is exploding.

Ohhhh great....I'll be a'frobbin' tomorrow!

Yes...our office building is very long...I walk myself to death...I look (kinda) normal early in the day...by the end of it, I'm draggin my right leg and slobbering on myself!

me so pretty

I'm just going to put some words in from done under in NZ. I had a knee replacement 18mths ago and have an artificial hip revised in 2000. It is now causing problems. But anyway back to the knee. Swelling takes months to decrease as does the warmth. Always felt i would be able to fry an egg on it for ages. Stationary cycle is the best and swimming. It will take a full year to actually get the best out of your knee and it is now that i feel it is great and taking the stress from the other leg. Have followed your other thread you guys seem to have quite a sense of humour in USA. Is that where you are from?

Tallahassee Fla, USA.
Yes there is a core group of us who have been on this site for a couple of months. And we do have fun as well as lift each other up during the recovery.
Thanks for your input. My knee is definitely on the warm side today. I worked it hard this a.m.

What time is is there. It is 8am in NZ. Also are you guys following the Clinton?Obama fight for leadership. We in NZ are not up with your political system but this 'competition to win' is quite intriguing for us NZers. Who is going to win?

RSKingston, welcome. The majority are from the U.S. but I live in Canada though was born in England. Lived here for 17 years. The people here are a lot of fun and an inspiration, without them I would have gone insane by now!!

Thanks for the info on your knee, nice to know there is light at the end of the tunnel, I am 9 weeks post op and still have a lot of problems with swelling, only got 90 degree bend so far.

Sorry to hear about your hip, There is also a hip forum here, I gues you've seen that?
Josephine will help you with that too, she lives in the UK and is our expert. Sue

yippee...I have a new friend and from New Zealand to boot!! Awesome.
My knee is hot all the time, too. It makes me SO happy to hear someone that has gone completely through the process and is happy and pain free (except the hip - so sorry)....Please keep posting - I'm learning so much about the WORLD!!!

Welcome!

Yes it will happen. But it takes pain. I had my knee don on Nov 15th 2006 and was not off pain killers at night until just before xmas. My husband brought me a necklace as a reward for no tabs at night. I have no kneecaps so rehab was slower. You need your KC to provide leverage for strnegth and flexibility. But with work i have got most bend back, but can't kneel. Also my physio said if you are younger (me 47) they put the new knee in a lot firmer than older people. That is why sometimes you see older people moving easier than you are.

rsk, It is now 4:40 pm here in fla.
As for the Clinton/Obama thing, yep I'm sure most of us are watching it closely. With two wars going on, a faltering economy, and gas prices climbing to record levels we need some leadership. As for who will win, the U.S. is very fragmented on that. On the whole it seems that for me, most of the time my vote is really against someone else getting elected as opposed to voting for someone. It seems I'm selecting the lesser of two evils. I don't trust politicians any further than I can see them. Tallahassee is the Fla. state capitol and I've had to deal with too many of them.

Hi Please tell me how to change my user name. It sounds a bit formal rskingston. My name is Sarah but can't figure how to change it. As my day is starting i better get some jobs done. We have family coming to stay from England so i better get the house okay. With the pain in my hip (seeing specialist on 25th) it takes me a while to do things. We are on a 800 acre sheep and beef so always dust and dirt in the house. We live a long way from anywhere. Most days only 2 to 3 cars pass our house so nice to be able to compare notes. Hope you all get good sleep tonight!!!

Hello New Zealand!! Too cool for words. Without this, how would we ever have connected?!?

I am walking, Doug. I am up to 4413 steps right now. Trying to do more but with the thunderstorms we are having it just isn't good weather and the nearest mall is 30 miles or more. So, I've walked from one end of our site here at work to the other. Still need to get in more walking steadily. My hubby is on the lookout for a stationary bike for me. I want a second hand one as they are so readily available, around now as folks give up on the new year's resolution. Keep asking me, please. Push me, ya'll. I need to be held accountable!!

As for Clinton/Obama... I think Obama has a better chance and may have a better chance of beating McCain. I'm a Republican so I will vote for McCain, but kind of wish he wasn't the choice. And I think I would be okay with Obama for the most part. Clinton scares me. I want no part of her and her quirky family. Just my humble opinion.

I had the unfortunate assignment of helping provide security for Hillary when she came here. She is a bi%$&. I know its not nice but true. Same for John Kerry's rich stuck up wife. We really had it with her.
I agree I wish McCain wasn't the choice but he's all there is.
And this is my last one on politics. It makes me feel dirty.

Doug, You always do so well with your walking. I am always impressed with the amount you do. I sure couldn't keep up with you but maybe once I have all my joints replaced, I will be able to.

My office building, the Pentagon, has 17 miles of hallways to walk so I have no problem with finding a place to walk. It takes me 10 minutes to get to my office once I get inside the building. Did you know the Pentagon has enough telephone line to wrap around the earth 4 1/2 times? Useless trivia, I know, but that's what happens when you work on the tourist route.

Politics? All I can say is I'm not a fan of any of them. The good ones don't run for office. Think Colin Powell. Karen

I need all of you to gather around me...I need love. I WAY overdid it today and tonight (grocery shopping)....after eating dinner, I sat on the couch. When I tried to get up, I had a breathtaking stabbing pain right above my knee cap on my GOOD (God given)knee. It's painful. My mom went over to the neighbors and borrowed the walker AGAIN!

I'll go to the Dr. in the morning BUT would anybody like to "play Dr" tonight?

it really hurts.

(Sarah and Karen...LOVE having you guys with us!!)

1jt, I have a friend, Roy Truba, a retired marine, who works at the pentagon. I know there are thousands that work there.
As for the walking, I have to force myself to do it. I'd rather be at a gym or practicing martial arts. I've been walking at a mall since the weather has been so bad(at least for N. Fla.) I don't know if you read a post I did early last week but there I was walking through the mall, thinking I was doing great. I blinked and two little old ladies with blue hair about as tall as a light switch passed me. Passed Me. The stud athlete(in my dreams)..I tried to keep up but they left me in the dust. I called my wife and told her I was getting new shoes and that I was now officially in training and that in one month I was going to be at the mall at 10a.m. and I was going to pass those two, spin around and stick my tongue out. I wouldn't do the tongue part but I will stick my chest out!

Perhaps if you tried doing several short walks during the day it at least adds up..Just a thought.
As for Colin Powell. I'd vote for him in a second.

Patti-
I am so sorry to hear this happened to you. As the "overdid it again whiner" of the group I can really identify..

You know the first drill: ICE ICE ICE ICE
and
Elevate, Rest, Anti-inflammatory meds?

We will hope you only irritated your (inflamed) knee.... and that it will recover from this with some reasonable care.

With the OA, good idea to get it checked out.....

I will pray for a good outcome for you!

C

Oh Patti, you poor thing. I guess you mean the knee you haven't had done yet? Make sure you take it easy, use that walker at all times until you see your doc. Hope it is a temporary condition and that it eases off. I can only imagine how worried you must be , you need that knee right now. Have you tried a bit if massage on it? I did that for an hour last night, on my TKR that is, it really helped ease it and even brought the swelling down a bit. I used some shower gel and a wet flace cloth, worked a treat, I don't have any oil. Don't know what else to say except sorry! J should be along later, I hope you will get some sleep tonight, My thoughts are with you. Sue

Oh Patti,
I am so very sorry. It actually made my eyes tear up. If you need me to I will set my alarm and check on you around 12 or 1am. I will definitely pray for you. I hope all of our buds check in and lift you up. If you need me to pm you my phone number I'll do that to. Darn, I can drive to N.C. in about 7 hours. Just tell me what you need.
I'll even bring some grits!!! Made you smile didn't I??

You SO made me smile! I love you guys! You know, I've gone back at it full force, working and all. We've all worked our non-op knee to death!!! I think I just pushed mine to the limit today. I'm sure the walk through the groc. store did me in.
It scared me to death. My mom said I turned pale. We think we're finally getting everything in working order then something else happens.....it made my heart sink.

I've iced it for the last 30 minutes....I'm staying off of it until in the morning.

thanks guys
love you....and i DO mean it!!
Patti
