My issue is my sciatica not my hip, but it's on my right side so hip not liking it either!
Went to my primary and they did X-Ray and everything appears to be fine. When I was working my back was going into spasms and I didn't listen to my body clues so now I'm doing some stretching exercises and icing.
Next stop is a nice massage.

@myglasshalffull oh, ouch! I have heard sciatic is super painful. Sounds like you’re doing all the right stuff. Enjoy that massage! I got one 2 days before my surgery knowing it will be a while before I have another. I am a big proponent of massage!

Feeling well—happy, relieved, peaceful that everything went as planned / hoped for and I am bouncing back so quickly. My two minor issues now are continued tiredness and hunger. I suspect both relate to the incredible amounts of energy it takes to heal your body. Yesterday, even after eating my tummy would rumble with hunger. And although I slept fairly well, I took a morning and an afternoon nap.

Did quite a bit of walking on my cane yesterday. Our neighbors in the two houses directly across the street are two retired couples who like to sit on the front porch in the afternoon. I call them my cheering section. When I am out walking, they cheer me on and tell me how well I am doing. I love it! They were all surprised to see me out on my cane at 2 weeks! I also got some stair practice in on my deck stairs.

I did drive my car yesterday even though my appointment isn’t until today and I haven’t been officially released to drive. I had no troubles at all since it was my left hip this time. Way easier getting back to driving with the left hip operated on.

I texted my boss yesterday and told her I plan to come back half days the week of May 8. After one week, I plan to get back to my regular schedule. Going back half days isn’t as scary. Four hours fly by and that gives me plenty of time to exercise, elevate, ice and take care of myself. I am getting back to work a week earlier than last time. In some ways, this recovery was slightly more painful with that awful knee pain, but somehow I seem to be healing faster. I think I have rested more this time because of that pain!

Doctors appointment at 11:30 today. I anticipate this will be uneventful. Just removing staples and adding steri strips. I will also return the 2-wheeled walker from the surgery center. I am still using a walker when I get fatigued and achy, but I have a four-wheeled one my husband picked up at a thrift store for me.

So, the things that are left to do include getting up and down my attic steps to get to my comfortable bed in my attic bedroom—hope to have that done this weekend—and switching over to ibuprofen for pain. And lengthening my sleeping time!

Next week, I plan to work on getting back to old routines so work won’t be such a shock to my system. I was going to ask hubby to stop cooking my breakfast today so that I can get back into my old routine of oatmeal, berries, and walnuts, but he already had the hashbrowns, eggs, and salsa going when I got out of bed this morning. Couldn’t shoot him or his delicious breakfast down. :heehee:

One of the things I need to work on is setting down my phone! My Apple alerts say my phone use is up by like 50 percent! It has been nice to have this forum (and Instagram) for some human connection without the exhausting effort of having to have people over IRL. My friends know from my last surgery that I just like to hole up in my little world while I am recovering, so they text and ask if I need anything but don’t feel insulted I am not having anyone over.

Anyway . . . probably don’t need to post daily updates now that I am doing well and sticking my toe back out into the “real” world. But I appreciate all the support, encouragement, and interaction here. What a great group! Other users may have already seen this, but there is a place to make a donation to help support this site. I hope you will consider it if you can! It has been so valuable to me having all these bone health experts chime in on my posts. I never once had to call a nurse on call during my recovery.

@MissFanny Yes definitely get new shoes! That old worn pattern is probably negatively effecting your gait. And might be causing aches and pains where there should be none at this point in your recuperation.

@djklaugh placed a Zappos order for a couple new pairs of shoes this morning! They arrive tomorrow. Can’t wait to see what that does for my discomfort.

It's such a relief to get those staples out, they start pulling on your skin after awhile.
My doctor told me best to do 30 minutes a day and split it up into three 10 minute intervals in the beginning so that's what I did in the early days.
Good job on ordering new shoes.
I've been wearing OOFOS and love them. Getting ready to order a new pair of slides I can see the wear pattern on the ones I have now, I believe I bought them in fall.

Fortunately I have no restrictions like that because I have a heel deformity that prevents me from wearing most shoes with backs. My PT also told me Birkenstocks are good.

Still kicking, still improving! New milestones include:

• Upstairs sleeping in my own bed! Yay! I don’t love coming down those steep attic steps, but the better sleep is worth it.
• Down to two doses of Tramadol now. I take it at 7 am to get that good pain relief first thing in the morning when I have my most energy. Then I take it again at 7 pm to get a good night’s rest. In between I take ibuprofen.
• Swelling is much improved. This is resolving faster than with my first surgery.
• Took two 20-minute walks yesterday on one of the most beautiful, sunny days. I used my 4-wheeled walker for 10 minutes and my cane for 10 minutes.

We are thinking about going on an outing today. A nearby town has a tulip festival next weekend. We may go today and check out the amazing tulips early. It will be tiring, but I like the idea of getting out of this house for a few hours. We’ll see how I feel later this morning.

New shoes are working out great! What a difference to be wearing nice, firm soles. Highly recommended if anyone finds this is an issue for them. I bought a new pair of ASICS sneakers before surgery and was able to wear those 4 hours yesterday before getting heel pain (unrelated to hips—bone deformity in my heel). New shoes are good for recovery, I’m learning.

Have you heard of Kiziks or Hoka's? They are slip on athletic shoes, that have a heel that rebounds. They actually look normal, unlike some unappealing orthopedic shoes. Modern colors, if you don't like the neutrals. I noticed somewhere Skechers has a line of these now also. I can't imagine they'd hurt your heel as they have to be softer than normal shoes and flexible enough to repeatedly rebound for the life of the sneaker. Sandals are fine for now, but once the weather turns in the Fall, take a look and see what you think IF you're not already familiar.

@Layla, I have heard of Hokas but not the other brand. I have been dealing with this for years. In the winter, I wear clogs or roomy boots. I have found one design of ASICS sneakers that are tolerable. I will also wear shoes with backs for as long as I can stand it and then switch to open back shoes. I have seen two foot and ankle doctors about it but neither wants to do anything aggressive until my hip surgeries are behind me. I have special stretches I do. Also, wearing light compression socks helps, but my surgeon doesn’t want me wearing those now (and pulling them on would be a struggle). This heel stuff is what I plan to tackle next. There’s a surgery but it takes a long time to heal from it and insurance won’t pay until you have exhausted every other possibility.

Beautiful day at a beautiful park abloom with redbuds. Our spring ritual is that we hike the 4.5-mile path around the lake each year. Needless to say, that didn’t happen today! But we drove through the park and walked on some of the paved and gravel paths for 25 minutes. It felt great to get out for a while! The day didn’t feel endless today.
