I had my THR in February and it left me with an inch longer leg....well now, I have been told by a specialist that I have developed Iliotibial Band Syndrome from possibly all of that lop-sided walking for so long. I had the limping long before the THR, which the OS would be relieved by giving up my hip...wrong...hip gone, pain worse!! Has anyone had this ITBS problem before and what did you do to relieve it. Runners get it often, but that certainly is not my case...I barely walked.

Phoggie.....sorry to hear of this latest problem. Did the doctor you saw at KU offer any options for treatment?

phoggie, that is a real downer for you. Wish I could help but sounds more like you need the services of a REALLY good PT.

However, as a bit of reassurance, one gets 'syndromes' all over the place - DeQuervains S - which is an inflammation of the tendons on the thumb side of the wrist, epicondylitis which is an inflammation of the ligaments on the outer aspect of the elbow, hamstrings, Achilles tendon, rotator cuff - all
these are examples of things doctors tend to call 'syndromes' if they go on long enough.

IOW anything that has nudged over the line from a brief or 'acute' event into a long standing or chronic condition, they tend to label syndrome. It's just another descriptive word.

Jamie (my fellow Kansan)~~

I saw Dr. Kelly Hendricks at the KU Med. Center. He ordered MORE PT and I had three cortisone shots in the area of where the long muscle from the waist meets the tendons in the lower leg (outside of the knee area). I asked the OS if this could happen because of the difference in leg length , because now all of my leg/thigh muscles have to stretch an inch longer...and he said, "Yes"...but they should stretch in time....how long?? This is the same area that we have fought for three years to find the pain and the OS said it was coming from the hip.....hip gone and pain worse!!!.....go figure~
Thanks for your concern and support.

phoggie,
I'm also so sorry your having to deal with this. I wish I had an answer, but as you may have seen my husband is about to have his THR, so we're really new to this.
I do hope you can get some answers/ideas about how often this happens, cause frankly you have me concerned now for my husband.

I'll keep you in my prayers that this is resolved in a good way soon!
