Hi 57 years old from Croatia and replace left hip on 04.12.2024 and everything is like peace of cake but (always but ) before 5 days I have pain in my hip and leg when I walk, when I stand still it doesn't hurt. From the sixth day from surgery I walk without crutches and almost every day I walk more than 7 km until
5 days ago when the pains appeared, I stopped drinking pain pills, I had an examination with the operator and everything is ok.
what could have happened, is it possible that I pushed myself too hard?
thanks for the answer

Hello and Welcome to BoneSmart! Thanks for joining us.
If I'm understanding you correctly, it's a new pain that you're dealing with that began five days ago and you were examined by your orthopedic surgeon and told everything is okay?

I am confused by "drinking pain pills". Were you still on medication in relation to your THR and if so, why....if you don't mind answering?

Hello @Ante

I believe your surgery was in December and
five days ago you had pain?

Yes, you are doing too much!
The muscles, tendons, ligaments, and bones need months to heal! You're walking too much, doing too much!

Please look at this

HIP RECOVERY GUIDELINES

1. Don’t worry: Your body will heal all by itself. Relax, let it, don't try and hurry it, don’t worry about any symptoms now, they are almost certainly temporary.

If you want to use something to assist with healing and scar management, BoneSmart recommends hypochlorous solution. Members in the US can purchase ACTIVE Antimicrobial Hydrogel through BoneSmart at a discount. Similar products should be available in the UK and other countries.

2. Control discomfort:
rest
elevate
ice
take your pain meds by prescription schedule (not when pain starts!)

3. Do what you want to do BUT
a. If it hurts, don't do it and don't allow anyone - especially a physical therapist - to do it to you
b. If your leg swells more or gets stiffer in the 24 hours after doing it, don't do it again.

4. PT or exercise can be useful BUT take note of these
BoneSmart philosophy for sensible post op therapy

5. At week 4 and after you should follow this

Sleep deprivation is pretty much inevitable - but what causes it?

BIG TIP: Hips actually don't need any exercise to get better. They do a pretty good job of it all on their own if given half a chance. Trouble is, people don't give them a chance and end up with all sorts of aches and pains and sore spots. All they need is the best therapy which is walking and even then not to excess.

We try to keep the forum a positive and safe place for our members to talk about their questions or concerns and to report successes with their joint replacement surgery. While members may create as many threads as they like in a majority of BoneSmart's forums, we ask that each member have only one recovery thread. This policy makes it easier to go back and review history before providing advice.

This is a marathon recovery not a sprint.
Walking is best but don't overdo it.
My doctor told me in early days if I walk 10 minutes 3x's a day rather than 30 minutes all at once that's better.
So I listened & it did help. Even now that I'm fully recovered I can walk up to 6 miles a day but I still break them up into 2 mile intervals.
Listen to your body's clues, if hip says rest, then rest & ice, even if it's just for 1/2 hour.

Please let us know if you improve or not during the next week or two.

greeting
here I am again, I stopped walking long distances, I walk short distances with one crutch, I do exercises in bed, I take a ketonal 100 mg pain tablet in the morning and the pain is reduced by 80%, although it is still there, when I rest I have no pain, only when I walk and that has also decreased since I use a crutch for walking.
I feel a little burning along my leg, but not excessively and it is only when I active.
I was afraid that it was an infection (the brain immediately thinks the worst), but the wound has healed perfectly and, apart from now a little pain when walking, everything else is ok.
otherwise, I was an active athlete and walking after surgery (6 th day without crutches a month and 10 days of walking 200 km) was not a problem for me, but now I see that I wanted too much, so slowly, slowly.
sorry for the long post and bad english.

Your English is fine, and I believe your hip will be also!

Walking is good, walking slowly with good posture and no limp is the goal. To achieve the goal it's best to walk a few good steps instead of a lot of sloppy ones. It hurts less and there's more accomplished.

Happy Two Month Anniversary Ante!
I hope you're doing well since you last posted and you're having weather decent enough to enjoy some sunny outdoor walks. I am guessing that as an active athletic type this recovery feels slow to you. It does take time and patience, but you'll get there.

In the interim, if interested, I encourage you to familiarize yourself with an opportunity to take your experience here to the next level. We appreciate and value your support as part of this community and thank you for joining us to share your joint replacement journey.

BoneSmart launched the Insiders Club which offers special perks above the basics, making the most of what BoneSmart has to offer. If you're interested, we'd love to have you join us!
