I am 7 months out from knee replacement and am doing well. Only occasional pain (not bad), good mobility, good range of motion. Main problem; popping with each and every step. Very annoying. Not painful. What could cause this? My doctor pays little attention and makes reference to metal and plastic.... It is driving me crazy and makes me not want to walk much.

Other problem: skin discoloration (almost black) all down the calf of the affected knee. Still have quite a bit of numbness in the knee. I keep hoping the skin will clear. Circulation?

sheral, I have moved your post into a thread of its own as it will be more likely to get answers that way.

As for your problem, I think you should be talking with your OS about this, not your doctor. Especially about the discolouration. Without seeing it, I cannot comment. But the popping needs an expert opinion.

Sheraldk --

Apparently the clunking and popping is quite common. I have double clunks with each step and find it very annoying, as well as a bit uncomfortable. I've been told that it may vanish as my leg muscles build. But six months in, I still have it. For extended walks I'm using an MP3 music player with ear buds. It's amazing how it lessens the impact of the clunks. Now, I can't wear it at work and it doesn't make sense walking around at home. But for exercise walks and longer walks, it makes for vast relief. When you don't hear the clunks, they really seem to lessen the effect.

I have adopted the American tendency to call orthopaedic surgeons OS, physiotherapists PTs and operating theatres OR instead of using the proper terms!

Our situation is a bit different - mine HURTS. If I walk ~200 yards total in a day I will spend the next day in bed.

I THINK I could learn to ignore the noise, but the sensation KILLS me. The best way I can describe it is when my dentist used the metal handle of his pick to knock on the side of a molar which had gotten rotten under the filling. It's a metallic (or at least "hard") sort of stabbing... Ouch.

It's pretty odd - until I started crying all over the 'net I couldn't find anyone with the same sort of clunking problem, now we're coming out of the woodwork...

I noticed that too, Dad.
