I just read through your whole thread and just wanted you to know that I'm thinking of you in your distress and hoping that someone can help to manage your pain effectively and quickly. This is a "blip" in the radar of life...
Hello @Anniec19
I'm sorry you're off to a rough start...
Hopefully you're resting comfortably by now and your pain is well managed. Please ask for ice if they're not providing it. It really helps with pain and swelling.
I'll leave some guidelines here until we get a thread started for you on the Hip Recovery side.
Wishing you comfort
Hip Recovery: The Guidelines
1. Don’t worry: Your body will heal all by itself. Relax, let it, don't try and hurry it, don’t worry about any symptoms now, they are almost certainly temporary
2. Control discomfort:
3. Do what you want to do BUT
a. If it hurts, don't do it and don't allow anyone - especially a physical therapist - to do it to you
b. If your leg swells more or gets stiffer in the 24 hours after doing it, don't do it again.
4. PT or exercise can be useful BUT take note of these
BIG TIP: Hips actually don't need any exercise to get better. They do a pretty good job of it all on their own if given half a chance. Trouble is, people don't give them a chance and end up with all sorts of aches and pains and sore spots. All they need is the best therapy which is walking and even then not to excess.
We try to keep the forum a positive and safe place for our members to talk about their questions or concerns and to report successes with their joint replacement surgery.
While members may create as many threads as they like in a majority of BoneSmart's forums, we ask the at each member have only one recovery thread. This policy makes it easier to go back and review history before providing advice.
@Anniec19 .....congratulations on making it to recovery. But I'm sorry to hear you're experiencing pain. Please don't be shy about getting a nurse and telling her that you need something for your pain. You have to be a bit assertive these days. I'm sure the surgeon left a variety of orders for you, so it is likely if one protocol isn't getting the job done, there will be something else that can be tried until you find the right medication to keep you comfortable. Proper pain management is critical in these early days and weeks.
You'll notice that I've moved your post-op comments and some follow-on posts to your own thread in the recovery forum. This is where you'll post your updates and any concerns that you may have. I made a thread title for you, but feel free to change it at any time to whatever suits you.
So I didnt sleep due to pain even with oxycodone 2 hourly and a long release one aswell. They're sending a pain specialist to see me shortly. I managed to walk to the toilet earlier but had to have a long sweaty rest before going back to bed. The walking was ok it's the getting up to standing tha6s the killer. I'm back in bed with more oxycodone so hopefully things will improve today.
So sorry you are having a hard time with pain control. It sounds like they are trying to address the issues. Hopefully the pain control specialist will be able to help.
I am so sorry you are having such pain.. ask for more ice and warm blankets.. and I agree with what Jamie recommended and that is to not be shy about calling the nurses in as much as needed.
Glad to read they are bringing in a pain management specialist, I hope they arrive sooner than later!
It does be easier, try to hang in there, ok? warm hugs!!
Up on crutches now but decided I was strong enough to go to the loo by myself....big mistake...peed all over my nightie so then had a meltdown getting clean pyjamas n back into bed then dropped crutches x felt such a fool :(
They've told me it's too soon to do so much n to shout for the nurses x
Pain is much better but still not 100% controlled
I'm sorry you're feeling down. Please understand accidents happen and it's just another day at the office for your caregivers who do this daily. They are unaffected and it's their job. Use that buzzer while you're there.
Thankfully your pain has lessened and hopefully you're able to rest comfortably. Early days, sweetie. It will get better!
