One week ago today I had my TKR; repha was going great; looking ahead. THEN all of a sudden both of my ankles begin to hurt (Sat. night); Sunday morning rolls in and if it were not for the walker I would not be able to get anywhere.
Any thoughts on this?

I don't know what your pain is (never had anything like it) but my one
word of caution is could it be blood clots if it might be you ought to get
it taken care of.

JABIII,

I had my second tkr last week on the 9th. I was doing so well after getting home that I was walking around the kitchen unassisted and using only one crutch at other times. Over the weekend, I started having trouble with the calf of my leg and I couldn't even put my foot flat on the floor. It felt like someone had shrunk my calf muscle and it still does, actually. I was worried about a blood clot because of the drastic change and went to the ER yesterday. They did a doppler ultrasound and everything was fine. No clots. The technician said there is a lot of extra blood in the leg that is causing the pain and until it dissipates, I was going to have pain from it. This has definitely slowed me down. No matter how hard I stretch, it just wont budge. I'm back to two crutches full time.

Do you have a home health nurse visiting that you could talk to about the ankle pain? If not, I would suggest calling the surgeons office for guidance. You sure don't want to chance anything that might be a clot but I would really think that might not be your issue since the pain is on both sides. Good luck with it and let us know how you do. CLARIFICATIOIN. My pain was so bad I was only able to use walker. I was seen by the OS, he removed fluid from ankle (opposit the relpacement); got a shot of cortozone; went home and felt much better next day. I went back today to have staples removed and he told me the fluid was from gout. The oS explained that gout can sometimes be triggered by such trama as the replacement.
Ahnhow all is well, no more walker, using cane now- as much for confidence as anything; still some discmmfort.
Thanks to those who responded; I too was concerned about a clot.
