I'm someone who wants to know as much information as I can absorb and found the following sites very informative and helpful to my understanding, especially when informing friends and family of the procedure:

This is an animation from DePuy Orthopedics of the anterior approach total hip replacement. It's a nicely produced animation of the procedure. Suitable for the faint of heart, no blood!

This is a video of a live surgery from Bozeman Deaconess Hospital, of the anterior approach hip replacement surgery. It was produced by DePuy Orthopedics. This is an actual surgery, so you should only view this if you want all the details. Not for the squeamish or faint or heart!

Hope you find this helpful!

Good links, those, TP. In the animation it demonstrates very well, not only the way muscles are split and held aside but also the use of the bone lever retractors to do this which accounts for much of the wound swelling and peripheral soreness in the early post-op days.

Thanks very much.
